I'm a Cow at USMA, AMA (Ask Me Anything)

The logo on the compression shorts cannot show below the line of the shorts you wear over it. Some logos can be melted off w/ an iron and others can be colored over w/ a sharpie.

Your shorts can be whatever color you want. As long as they don't go down so low to be visible in PTs. I mean, my roommate wears neon briefs and I wear pastel colored plad boxers everyday. It's the same for socks in ACUs. The clothes people can't see are up to your discretion. If it is visible, that's when you want all black no logos.

Hey everyone!

Question your ya TPIAD, on the packing list for Beast, they say not to bring any no-prescription meds, but that we may be able to buy some at the cadet store. Do you remember anything about this? Also, any painkillers you would recommend haha?

I'm not sure, but it makes sense. If you really need over the counter meds, go to sick call and you can get some free. I personally don't use painkillers often. The only time I took any was after I got hurt and during CFT. During CFT I would take advil PM before going to sleep to help reduce any inflammation from rucking and what not. Beast isn't too hard physically so I don't think you'll have an issue. It'll be hard, but not like rucking every day hard.

Thanks man. I just heard from some people it was a good idea and I just wanted your opinion.

Another thing tho, what is the running like? I think you already talked about how it's split up into groups, but what are the distances like? And how frequently do you run during beast?

Thanks again for you help! I know I and a lot of others really appreciate it.

You'll run at least a few times a week. Expect to do it 3 or 4 times weekly. It's usually 2-3 miles or less. You have to warm up, conduct PT, and be done in the span of an hour and a half or so. Interval sprints are done on a track, run groups are pretty easy unless you're fast and get put in a super group, and the other times you'll just run to wherever you're doing PT. I didn't think it was that bad and I'm hella slow.

I'm interested in engineering but I don't know which one--I'm good at math but I prefer to do things with my hands. Any suggestions?

Also, I don't know if you can answer this, but what are the regulations for female cadets with short hair? And are there any suggested hair styles for the academic year and any for beast?

Question, I know that the backpack we have to wear must be black with no logos, I have an all black pack with a subdued black embroidered logo. You cannot tell it is there unless you are close to it. There are also logo symbols on the buckles, again you can't tell unless you look close. Do you think I be able to wear this backpack?

-Thanks

Order boots by preference, I personally wear blackhawk desert ops boots. They are comfortable and have gotten me through a combined 10 weeks in the field by this point. Love them to death. ACUs refer to our combat uniform, there are two variants: UCP and OCP. You'll be issued OCP, we have UCP and have to buy OCP at some point. 2020 will most likely get OCP since that's what the Army is transitioning too (plus it looks so much better). I have a pair but if I wear them now I'd be one of the special snowflakes wearing OCP and everyone would think I was a tool. Raggedy torn up, ghetto sewn UCP it is haha. Be nice to your uniforms too, in three years I have catasrtophically torn so many pairs I don't get how it is possible. .

They only had the Belleville C390 Hot weather tactical boot at the local military base. Is that a good boot, or should I buy something else online? I figure if he needs a winter boot we can buy it later. Will this boot be usable with both the UCP and OCP uniforms?

Belleville's hold up well. General rule is you can go use forward but not back.

I bought that boot today as its one of the only 3 approved, and currently available, for the class of 2020. When I got home I wore it around for a bit and it was just as comfortable as a boot can get. I can't answer the part about uniforms since I don't know about that, but I can tell you it's a great boot.

If you like doing things with your hands, I recommend Mechanical. As a cow, you'll spend a lot of time in the machine shop creating components and gear systems. I picked Mech for similar reasons, I liked physics and tinkering with things.

As for hair, if I remember right, as long as your hair in the back isn't over your collar it's fine to be short. As a male, I typically keep my hair long during the academic year, longer over the summer. Every haircut inspection is a toss up on whether or not my TAC is shaving my head :shake:. It'll be different for you of course, and I'm ignorant of the specifics for women. Sorry I don't know more.

Sure. I have an old Janesport backpack from High School I still wear, it's denim, I sharpie'd the logo black, and I've had zero issues, aside from people telling me a single pocket backpack (that's typically empty) makes it look like I bring nothing with me to class.

For boots, ya'll will be in OCP so they must be coyote brown. You can wear desert tan technically but since you'll be in OCP all the time, I say stay with coyote. I don't know which ones are 'official' but for beast and the Academic Year as long as they're legit combat boots in coyote brown you're all set. I use a boot from a smaller brand that isn't in any 'official USMA lists' and I have no issues because A) It's just a boot and B) It meets Big Army rules and is coyote brown.

How difficult are the required foreign language classes at USMA?
If you do german, spanish, or french, not too bad. If you do Russian, Arabic, or Chinese get ready for a tough semester. Engineer students don't take a 3rd semester, and the 3rd is usually the hardest.

Are there any opportunities to go to away games for any sports to support?
Yes, there are 'spirit passes' which allow you to leave on Saturday (woohoo A/C training HOOAH) go to the game (in uniform) and then return for recall formation for Sunday night. I typically only do it for Army Navy, but others have gone home or to NYC on spirit pass.

Are pull-ups part of the PT test at USMA ....because not part of army PT test. I can do them no problem. Just wondering how often you do them in beast if not really part of army PT test.

Thanks for answering so many questions.
