I'm sure there is a logical reason 360+ Mids didn't get their flights today....

My dad was a longtime VR flightcrew and flew many airlifts to 'Hook.

As a longtime SWO, you'd think that I would not be a 'Hook vet but you'd be wrong. A few yrs after the mess in las Vegas, Tailhook
restarted its annual conference in Reno and although tamer than the Vegas version, it was still a great time. As part of my civilian job,
I attended for about 10 straight years and had a very good time. Lots of hours working but I know quite a few aviators who attended
as well and even brought my USNA-bound son one year.

My experience at the old factory on Cocoa Ave. as a kid put me off chocolate for life. There was this huge factory floor with rows and rows of vats that I guess cooked down the beans. It smelled horrible. Couldn't get out of there fast enough. Switched to licorice. Look at the color of the floor below...

My frigate was redisignated a training ship for the Naval Reserve and thus was assigned females. To brush up on my female specific diagnostic and exam skills, I got in on an OB/Gyn rotation with a group of medical officers at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. This was in 1991.

One of the doctors name tag read: KELSO

There was no doubt in my mind who his daddy was as he looked just like him. I commented to him how big a pain it must be to have his dad as CNO. He said something like, "You have no idea. The number of but-kissers who introduce themselves daily is staggering. I just want to be doctor and be left alone."

One of my detailers summer 1989 was the DS of a bigwig whose name just about anyone would recognize even now. On oath night, he gathered those of us in India Company and said "As far as you are concerned my name is not Mr. X but Mr. Smith. Anyone who thinks they can brown-nose their way to easier training or a better review is gonna get a big mouthful of s*** for nothing but more pain."

As you can imagine, there were various hijinks with his name(s) that summer and during plebe year, when he was a squad leader. He really turned out to be an excellent leader.

Rental cars are a mess, but it’s been beneficial to me. I travel a bit for work and our company categorizes your allowed rental car class based on your company role. This puts me in the “full-size” class which used to mean a Malibu. The last three trips I’ve had an Escalade, a Tacoma pickup, and an Audi Q7 because inventory is so low they have to give me whatever is left, provided that it’s no lower than my full-size reservation. Win for me.

Rental car story: Stationed with CBIRF and one of my medical officers and I went to the Special Operations Medical Association Conference one year in Tampa. We went to the rental car desk after landing and the young lady said, "You're authorized a compact but oh darn, we don't have any. I'll have to upgrade you at no extra cost of course."

My doc said, "uh what can you give us?"

"Well, I have a Mustang convertible, an Escalade, a---"

"We'll take the Mustang," I said.

She smiled and gave us the keys and paper work. We had to walk past a row of compact Sentras and Corollas to get to the 'Stang.

We had a Nimitz in the brigade a couple of yrs senior to me and he seemed to be a pretty decent guy. One of my ships also had a descendant of someone who has buildings named after him and he clearly was in the Navy to please the family and he was neither happy nor a particularly good officer.

The Sagamore is great. We spent time in Lake George last summer and it’s like a throwback to the 70’s. My dh did some research and we took a side trip to Grant’s summer home and that is definitely worth it!!! Also the tour of Ft William Henry. (We did Ft Ticonderoga and Saratoga NP too to complete the history lesson.)

Cancelled yet again and this time rebooked via Dallas. That leg was then cancelled and rebooked, only to learn it was a software error (airline’s words) and didn’t need to be rebooked. He ultimately got where he was going, but that’s our post-covid world.

My Mid sent me picture of them chilling in the back of a Uhaul van. Some sleeping. They rented it, instead of a car. Bc cheaper, cars are sold out, and they can nap in the back. I thought it was pretty smart, actually!! Maybe not as safe….

BTW….any update on the Mid Movement situation? My guy on the Yard said that 20 more were supposed to leave today. It’s going to take a minute at that rate!
 
I think approximately 100 of them got out on five separate flights today. My mid got the email at 10:30 last night and was on a flight at 6:30 this morning. Arrived at 12:30 local time, checked into their hotel, then off to whatever it is that they were scheduled to do for the afternoon.

I have heard several are taking a non commercial flight out tomorrow. Hopefully that gets the rest. Not sure what exposure they can cram into Friday for their first week's community.

Can’t make the pilots work longer. FAA regulations and such. Busting the rules will result in a loss of license for the pilots and a fine for the airline. This happened after pilots were pushed to fly fatigued and ended up bending perfectly good metal. Killed a “few” people in the process as well. The last major change happened about 10 years ago. I think.
Some airline leadership (management and unions) worked through COVID together and came out on the other side without furloughing pilots. This paid off. When you furlough a pilot it’s expensive and time consuming to train them again. Airlines have limited training facilities so if you’re training furloughed pilots you can’t train new hires. You can’t just throw a pilot who has been sitting for months into a cockpit (sorry- “flight deck”) without training. Those airlines that didn’t lay off pilots aren’t cancelling flights, or at least not as many. That’s as far as I’ll take that subject.

As a reserve SWO, not only did I have to run in to the Reserve Center to sign the "I wasn't there" affadavit on short notice but I actually had to do it several times as they polled EVERYONE repeatedly.
FWIW: As a reservist, the Navy generally did not know where I was on a day to day basis but at the exact time of Tailhook, I was aboard ship for a NATO exercise off the coast of Norway.

I thought my brother said it was an annual thing but wasn’t sure. That makes it even more humiliating for a P-3 pilot. “Really??? How many times do I have to tell you. I fly P-3s.”
 
How long are the typical sub cruises now? My DS’s has been shortened to 6 days (which includes 2 days travel). Wondering if this is across the board.

I have heard that there is an equipment shortage this year…I’ve got a few friends whose Mids sub cruises were shortened significantly. So your sons length seems about right this summer, at least. From those that I have spoken with.
