Oklahoma schools give in-state tuition to kids in ROTC. Are there other ROTC-friendly schools, offering tuition breaks for ROTC?

Here are 10 schools that have offered in-state tuition for out of state students.
  • Augusta University
  • West Virginia University
  • University of Arizona
  • Emporia State University
  • Mississippi State University
  • University of Arkansas
  • University of Baltimore
  • Louisiana State University
  • Kansas State University
  • Texas A&M University
I would confirm with each school whether in state tuition is offered to out of state candidates and under what circumstances. Overall, confirm between financial aid, merit scholarships, ROTC scholarship, school support at some schools and some branches to cover room and board for those on ROTC scholarship, in-vs-out of state what your total cost to attend is - we had a spreadsheet going back in 2018-2019 when my DS was applying - in the end even with a Navy/Army/Air Force four year scholarship, the total cost to attend varied between schools and branches from a negative number (he made money attending college) to over 70k for the four years of room and board. We even factored in costs to travel back and forth for 4 years so we had a pretty good picture of the costs. I would also get every assurance of how it works in writing. Confirm which colleges let you keep your merit or financial aid if also on a full scholarship. For example, ERAU offers Army and Navy scholarship recipients on-campus double occupancy room and a 14 meal a week plan. they also refund the student any bright futures, financial/ merit aid that the student receives. That on top of a monthly stipend, and for those who hustle and have a side job - it's a pretty sweet way to enter adulthood with five figures of savings, and also live pretty large while at school. Conversely, I recall a near fistfight when I was in college and someone (I) "carelessly" ordered a pizza we were sharing, from the place that cost 1.00 more than the cheaper, less tasty alternative. Some other schools and Air Force provided some relief - like they would provide 16k for year 1, but still that left over 50k in costs.

Getting out of college with zero debt today is - well, it doesn't stink. it's one of my main missions in life to have my kids not be saddled with serious debt when starting out in their military or civilian respective careers. Good on you for thinking about this proactively. Good luck.

So, is a student allowed to put one of the schools that waive out of state tuition for scholarship recipients as a school where they qualify for in state tuition on their list of schools for NROTC? (This is something that has always been confusing to me.)

Just curious, what does in state or out of state matter if the scholarship is full tuition?

My understanding is Army gives you a choice to use the scholarship for tuition or R/B, and Navy only recently started doing that. Some schools will allow you to stack scholarships and some schools offer very little to no merit scholarships.

You can add University of Tampa to the list. The in-state and out-of-state cost is the same. Also not that if your student get a 4yr ROTC scholarship, UT give them free housing and meals (15 per week).

I’m planning for in case my son doesn’t receive the scholarship. Since he would still like to be in ROTC, and he’s definitely going of out state for school. Love the schools that offer in-state for ROTC participation! It will save us tens of thousands of dollars.

I have read on some college websites that their schools offer room/board to ROTC scholarship recipients. So it wouldn't apply to those who are just participants in the ROTC program. Also, some detailed that they offer room/board to 3 year recipients as well, even though their tuition would not be covered by DoD. Just something to notice and think about. That's a nice benefit for the 3 year winners.
