In today's NY Daily News

Senior football and lacrosse players. How sad for them, and for the Academy.

I am sure they are sad they got caught. Serious charges of distribution and related elements, so they were deliberate in what they were doing (allegedly), and in profiting from it. This doesn't seem to be an isolated incident of usage or possession. If they are convicted, should the Article 32 lead to a GCM, it will likely mean a punitive discharge, a criminal record and repayment of their USMA education in the six figures. I don't know what the current precedents are for incarceration.

I do feel sadness for their families and friends, who have no doubt been very proud of their West Point cadets. And I feel for WP, who gets the ink on this. No doubt it will be another Academy's turn soon enough.

I hope any cadets who may have purchased a prohibited substance from them are now scared silly enough to never do it again.

I did some very cursory searches. Appears 2 of the 6 are not athletes, but a handball player and lacrosse manager. One appears to be a delayed grad who played football. Reading about each of them, none appear to have been main players on their teams. One of the lacrosse players is the son of two West Point grads and father is a Colonel. Obviously none of that is official, just info from USMA websites. As Capt MJ stated, I feel sad for those around them, but not them. They go themselves in this mess and had amazing futures ahead of them. They ruined it with bad decisions. Glad it was discovered now and not later when they were in the operating forces. Not sure how they were coddled or how being an athlete played into this.

They say, when someone has a sudden surge of money, it only amplifies who they really are. In this case, (I can only imagine and speculate) the sudden surge of money IE Cow loan amplified their character flaws. The Cadets may have self empowered themselves thinking a purchase could quickly be sold for a profit. It didn't turn out that way in a culture of Duty and Honor and a tattoo placed on each Cadet - upside down on their chests, so when they look down it is right side that reads. "A Cadet Will Not Lie, Cheat or Steal and Will Not Tolerate Those Who Do" (in LARGE font, HAHA also figuratively speaking) Thank goodness the vast majority of Cadets have good moral value. (maybe Jiminy Cricket watching over each one them) As a Cadet trudges through his/her 47 month experience, they become more cynical in their view of the world. I often wondered if this is healthy for developing future leadership in the Army. But once you see WP in their rear view mirror and enjoy the "Big Army" you quickly realize its a big world out there to make your mistakes and success. And you hope and pray your college major and branch selection will forge you to be a success in the civilian world. These kids will shed a light on WP and but will not tarnish the good works of many who are part of the "Long Gray Line" For those who know they posses a character flaw and wish to attend WP, I would offer you this advise, DON'T! Go to a civilian U where that culture is promoted. We have too much at stake for future leadership development.

Being a former Army handball player, I object to the "not an athlete" :p

That said, its disappointing but I'm glad this is getting resolved prior to their commissioning. There's enough things in the big Army that need improvement.

Everyone at West Point is considered an athlete...whether D1, club, or intramural level. Yes, this is the sordid tale we heard rumors about back in the spring. Very unfortunate that this has occurred and brought negative press to West Point. Drugs are horrible and I hate to see young people who have ruined their lives by getting involved with them.

It is mandatory all Cadets participate in a sport. ie D1, Club, Intramural, company level. However, not everyone is an athlete, there is a big difference.

BTW: Check out the book, Moms Guide to Surviving West Point. One of my favorite sections "The other woman"

But every cadet an athlete! (Yes this is the biggest lie the Academy tells. Just watch the Corps attempt the IOCT...)

HAHAHA you're spot on!

Most activities are selected by the most "Athos" opportunity. In my opinion

Well when your options are drill or go try something new, there really is no option...well except in the case when you're on the drill team and get authos to go drill. I never understood those people...
