My son is filling out the Army ROTC scholarship and I mistakenly gave him the wrong SSN. Is there a way we can correct it? My son is saying that it can't be changed anymore. Thank you.

+1 to AROTC-dad. I expect its used as an ID in their Databases. They can perhaps fix it but they'll need to run a special SQL job to do so. I'd get it fixed as it could lead to problems down the road.

We’re hoping it gets fixed quickly. This was totally my mistake and I feel bad for my son. Thank you.

Do NOT start a new application. It will just confuse matters.

Have your DS call Cadet Command by phone. (Him, not you).

If you still get no response, then have him contact the ROO at his closest Army ROTC college.

Ditto advice above, and have DS call ASAP. The SSN is the root military identifier, and errors should be fixed right away. They might be able to re-open that part of the app, or cancel completely and tell him to start a new.

Here’s the place to start. Read the whole page to see what the best fit is for the situation. I always go for a live call first. Have your DS organize his thoughts, have paper and pen ready, and step up to making a professional live phone call.

So sorry. I feel your pain. I did same thing. My son asks for almost no help yet I botched this one. His USNA, NROTC, and DODMERB initially with wrong SSN. I have 4 kids and at one time transcribed all their SSN's but did this wrong. I believe this has all been taken care of by him. NROTC actually was taken care of with one phone call according to my son, so I guess totally different than AROTC. Tell your DS to keep trying. I am sure this happens not infrequently. He had to scan his SSN and email to DODMERB. Best of luck!

Outside of needing your social security for employment and ID purposes, I dont understand why the military still uses the social security as part of their military ID. I think when my son went to AF Field Training , he had to put part of his social security number on his military duffle bag. That is absolutely crazy in todays world where your social security number is the gateway to having your identity stolen. The social security number should be part of the information you give them and not be part of the identifier when you log in.

My daughter says that her HR person in ROTC always shakes his head when he sees her because on her very first paperwork for ROTC as an MS1 (now an MS3), she listed a different SS# on 3 different items, which made his head explode. She will never live that down, and as a result she will never again forget her CORRECT social security number!

Thank you for the suggestion to call. I will have him call Cadet Command. However, we are overseas. If we don’t hear from them, should he contact the regional

Thank you. He did and got the email for a POC at Cadet Command. They have been communicating.

Yes, I only had one job and I failed ha ha. I think all is good now (crossing fingers). He has been communicating with someone at Cadet Command and he has been most helpful. Thank you!

Actually on the military ID cards, the SSN are no longer listed. Instead, they are the DoD numbers. But I agree with you. As a military spouse, the only way we could be identified was through our sponsor's SSN. I can tell you my husband's SSN in a heartbeat but have to think about mine ha ha.

That's one way to not forget it ha ha! Curious - what does MS1 and MS3 mean?
