I read somewhere that most undergarments would be thrown away after INDOC. If that's true, is it better to buy really inexpensive items or the kind that wick sweat away?

Buy the cheap ones for Indoc and plan on bringing the "Good Stuff" during Acceptance Weekend.

I can only speak for the guys on this... bring the white boxers and stuff for your inspection drawers... but for the rest of indoc you'll be better off in compression shorts. You're in PT shorts of the overwhelming majority of indoc, so I'd bring more than the minimum number of compression shorts.

Man, it has been so long ago. . . I can't remember if we had to bring our undergarments or they were issued. . . I DO remember the V Neck Undershirts that were required of us guys. . .

As a parent, I do not think my DS tossed any of his undergarments after indoc. I know that he had white compression shorts and the white underwear and white socks. When he came home at Christmas break, all of his "white" underwear was not exactly white...had a grayish tint to them. I believe that most , if not all of the plebes had white compression shorts. Buy what is comfortable for you...as long as it is the color that they say it should be in your logging in book. I do know that my DS had a pair of addias shoes - white with the 3 stripes that were royal blue and his "leader" did not like the color of the blue stripes and told him not to wear them again...sometimes you may think you have the correct item and color and but if your "leader" has a bad day, it will not matter what you have or who you are...it will not be good enough or correct. Personally, I don't think I would worry too much about the sweat or the wicking factor...ALL of the plebes candidates WILL sweat and you will all smell. Also remember that if someone in your company really messes up - no matter how good or correct you may be...there is a possibility that your entire company may have some extra play time in the evening...like extra running or push-ups or marching or...

You will be able to have your parents bring you extra new undergarments at either/both Acceptance and or parents weekend.

Best to you.

This made me laugh. The gray tint to white skivvies is a great hint at seagoing laundry challenges to come. I would come home from short deployments at sea with indeterminate colored underwear, but definitely no longer white. When my Navy DH returned from 9-month cruises, his skivvies were near sweatshirt gray and went straight to the all-purpose rag bag. His dresser was always re-stocked with new. It's desalinated sea water and industrial boilers of washers that produce the magic tint.

No, you don't throw them away, I'd say just bring some white boxers and some regular boxers from home (in reality nobody cares what underwear he's wearing.) It really doesn't matter much, indoc is like 20 days, and it will pass.

Yup, not thrown away, but can tend to get lost in the laundry or washed incorrectly. So, don't spend too much money, although I would imagine the tech kind will be more comfortable. Most of the time you will live in compression shorts, but NY can be hot and humid so you can sweat under your uniform too. Some people don't care and others are more picky. If you are picky, go for comfort.

White boxers, socks and compression shorts. A few extra socks and compressions are nice but not necessary. Save most extras until after indoc
