Intended Major - Congressional Nomination Application Essay Question

I am currently filling out my application for a congressional nomination and am trying to answer one of the short essay questions. It asks "If accepted to a service academy, what is your intended major? What do you plan to do after graduation? "

I am unsure whether I am going to study business (named management at USAFA) or chemistry. Does anyone know if the second part of this question is asking what I plan to do with my degree in the military or if it's asking me what I plan to do with it after my time in the military?

Again, if anyone has any clarity on the second part of the question or if talking about one major would be smarter than the other, please let me know.

The second part of the question is what you want to do in the MILITARY after graduation. Not what you plan to do with your degree in the military, what you expect to DO as a job in the military. For USNA, that should generally be Surface Warfare, Subs, Aviation, Marine Corps or Special Warfare although there are a few cats and dogs like Medical, etc.

For USAFA, you should examine the career fields open to graduates and use that knowledge to frame your reply.

This is really a test of whether you have researched the primary sources at USAFA and AF officer career path websites, thought seriously about your skills, talents and inclinations and how they might align with those, and be prepared for the the follow-on question, “If you aren’t selected for X, what have you considered for an alternate path?” All the while making good eye contact with the panel, if it’s that style, and expressing yourself articulately and professionally, with no whiffs of hubris.

It's ok not to be certain of your major or career path. As CAPT MJ says, it's about showing you know your options and have thought through them. Be prepared to describe why a certain major or career path appeals to you. And, for career options, indicate you are flexible in the event your first choice isn't available for some reason.
