Ireland 2023 Navy vs. Notre Dame

Recent info passed to me from a Segundo (2/C). Now to figure it out. I've never been to Ireland.

Class of 2024, 2025, and 2026,

Do you want to kick off the 2023 football season in Dublin with up to 500 of your closest friends?

The MWF Ticket Office will begin taking deposits October 15th. Additionally, please review the incentive package below as the deposit is NON REFUNDABLE. Please note that air transportation will be provided by chartered flights, individual travel is not authorized.

The incentive package for travel includes:

Commercial flights, lodging, ground transportation to/from the airport and game tickets.

Depart BWI the evening of Thursday, 24 August 2023. Arrive in Dublin the morning of Friday, 25 August 2023.

Depart Dublin the morning of Sunday, 27 August 2023. Arrive BWI the evening of 27 August 2023.

Midshipmen must be weekend eligible in accordance with COMDTMIDNINST 5400.6V (MIDREGS), no exceptions.

Alcohol policy for the trip is the same as US Federal law. Midshipmen must be 21 years old to drink.

Midshipmen must pay for and obtain a tourist Passport NLT Jan 2023 if they do not already possess one.

My mid mentioned estimated cost $1000, deposit $500. They received an email last week to gauge initial interest.

It’s too bad it can’t be a longer stay out there. It’s such a neat opportunity but they really only have Friday of arrival, to do anything. Wheels up again early Sunday. Heafty price tag for 48 hrs. I would be willing to supplement for the experience, but was hoping they would be able to tour or sightsee. Idk with such a short turnaround.

We went the last time they played ND in Dublin, hosted all of our sponsor mids to grown-up cocktails and hors d’ouevres at our hotel in DTD (downtown Dublin?!) before they headed out to do what young people that age do. They all had a blast, short and pricey as it was, packing every minute with fun (sleep was scheduled for flight home, it’s a college town with mids, ND and Trinity College - need I say more). Many of the firsties asked for this as their USNA graduation gift. They took the hop-on, hop-off bus to see the sights (Guinness!), were warmly welcomed by Dubliners, and did I mention they had a blast and thought it was one of their best USNA adventures?

They have 70-80 more years on the planet to go see the Cliffs of Moher, any number of ancient ruins and historic places and beautiful sights, but only one to go as a mid in uniform at the doorstep of adulthood. Don’t forget they are masters of time management by now; they will maximize their fun factor.

We also went when I was a BattO. Had so much fun we went the next time. Not sure if we are going next year. We usually build a 10-day trip in with the game in the middle. We like flying UA Newark to Shannon in the west of Ireland then driving. We drove NW last time, then slanted through the middle to Dublin, then SE after the game, and then back to Shannon. You clear US Customs & Immigration at Shannon before flying back to Newark. We took Amtrak from BWI Amtrak station near Annapolis to Newark Airport Amtrak station both ends. Easy-peasy.

Hmmmm 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

On these kinds of trips, does USNA take the D&B or Pipe and Drums or Glee Clubs?
Oh yes. There is a massive pep rally on St. Stephen’s Green. Bill the 2-legged goat is roaming around. Alumni are out in force. Mids, locals, etc., all enjoying the festivities.

I went last time for 8 days. Spent time in Northern Ireland and also Scotland for a day. It was a blast. We were tourists and tried to see it all. We had a group of 4 so we each had a day that we picked and then we had to go along and do what they wanted. Worked well.

We probably waved at each other in 2017! Navy and ND shirts and gear everywhere in the country, non-mid travelers having fun. We had drinks with a ND group at Ashford Castle after taking a falconry class together.

My DBIL and DSIL came along. DBIL is also a retired Navy captain aviator “non-grad,” who had a great time running into old shipmates and coordinating pub meet-ups. Met his old squadron XO, that turned out to be an epic meet-up. Fun for all, mids, parents, alumni, family.

Would Class of 2027, who would be plebes then, be eligible to go?
DS says he doesn't think plebes would be authorized, considering they will have just settled into the ac year coming out of plebe summer. There is also a limited number of tickets as well. But not 100% sure on it.

Daughter said she wanted a brand new 2024 Toyota 4-Runner for her graduation present … all Jacked-up and mean looking ???

It used to be that she wanted a brand new Jeep … but she changed her mind recently.

I guess we’re all going to Ireland too 😎

DW and me might hang out in Ireland for a few weeks …. You only live on this Earth once, so we’re going to have some fun.

Your DD should google NFCU car buying service; they have an affiliation with TrueCar. TrueCar also has a Military Buying Program. Certain brands also have military discount programs. USAA used to have a car buying service, then partnered with TrueCar, and then decided to step away, since TrueCar had a robust program of its own. We’ve used these military buying services many times, especially when selling a car in one place (better used car price in HI, rather sell it there than drive XC and add miles, choose air option to fly to new duty station, roll into dealership at destination and pick up car).

She should also see where she has orders to.

And yes, Ireland! Book your hotel now. Check out USNA Alumni Assn for hotel packages. Or just google the game for package deals - all kinds of travel vendors pop up.

Avila Stadium was not full either time we went, so based only on that, I don’t think tickets are a problem.

DS is planning to pay his deposit along with a bestie on 15 October. They are excited.
Also planning a kayak trip for spring break w/ a few friends, his 21st bday, kayak from brewery to brewery on a pre-plotted course from the purveyors of said kayak rentals. What could go wrong?

GO NAVY! BEAT THE IRISH!
