Is a medical disqualification the end of the road?

Hi all,

I received an LOA for USNA back in early January and a nomination from both MOC and Senator in December. All that has been left is my medical to get a waiver. I have bad eyesight and a medical incident about 4 years ago that I needed waivers for. Unfortunately, I was notified this afternoon that I was disqualified medically from USNA via my portal.

I also have already been selected for an NROTC scholarship and need waivers for the same medical issues. I'm assuming if I didn't get them from USNA I probably won't get them from NROTC either.

So where do I go from here? The whole reason I wanted to attend USNA or NROTC is that I wanted to serve in the Navy. Yes, the school itself was a great opportunity to continue my education but at the end of the day, I really wanted to be a Surface Warfare Officer and serve my country. These last 2 years have been spent preparing for Naval training and I can't imagine myself doing anything else.

Do I have another option? I have a great resume as shown by my acceptance to both programs. Many colleges have also already offered acceptances as well. So I have other options but is there anything else I can do to become a Naval Officer? Be part of the Navy at all? Can I go in enlisted or OCS? Do they require medicals too?

Is this the initial DQ, or did they deny the waiver? If it is the initial DQ, then they should request a waiver given that you have an LOA. If they denied the waiver, then unfortunately it would be the end of the road.
Hope this helps.

It is the waiver request. It says "We regret to inform you that the disqualification must remain in place and a waiver will not be granted."

It is not over, depending on what condition it is and your situation. By no means can my situation be used for yours as all are different but I was disqualified for USNA and NROTC and waited for a waiver from August. I had both a LOA and nom in hand and NROTC scholarship. I was finally approved a USNA waiver in late February. I have yet to hear about a waiver for the NROTC scholarship.

Do not lose hope! Each SA and ROTC program has different waiver authorities. Case in point, my DS was DQ‘d with no option of a waiver from USMA in October. Received a 4-year AROTC scholarship, and they APPROVED his waiver.

In other threads I’ve read that you have an opportunity to appeal the waiver decision - but I believe they send you instructions as to how to do that. Maybe search up appeal or waiver appeal.

It doesn't "transfer," but yes, it will be DQd for enlistment and would require a medical waiver:

" MEDICAL STANDARDS FOR MILITARY SERVICE:APPOINTMENT,ENLISTMENT, OR INDUCTION" :wiggle:
