Wondering if a portal is allowed for my DS to use in his room when talking to friends and family back home. It is similar to FaceTime but the portal is about the size of an iPad and it brings a bigger and clearer live picture when talking to each other.

On behalf of your son and his roommates even if it is allowed please don’t do this. Signed, a former college student.

IDK. Pinky MacArthur would have loved one of them.

Haha! My mom threatened me with a similar move, luckily real estate in Great Neck is more expensive than West Point

I doubt the device would be allowed to connect to the network. Network security and all that. If it can work via cell signal then perhaps it could work, or it could used in town through some free wireless connection at the coffee shop or something.

As stated the issue would be connectivity to the USMA wi-fi. Skype works perfectly well on the issued PC's. Then again, one must remember that the rooms are shared with two other room mates and all are very probably on different schedules bringing quiet time issues into play. Don't be the one..... Phones are most convenient and portable. There will be time alone in the room, but probably not enough to justify an extra device requiring a hot spot. To my knowledge the closest Starbucks with free wi-fi near the Cadet Barracks closes daily at 5 or 6 so it really doesn't work out.

Thank you for the replies and advice. A friend mentioned a portal, and to be honest I have never even heard of it.

A portal sounds like something from Stargate... and feels more like an USAFA thread.

I would think they would not be allowed as even iPads are regulated to certain models and USMA security has to be installed on those.
