Is it appropriate to tell AO about nominations to other SAs?

DS just learned that he received a congressional nomination to USNA, USMA, and the merchant marine academy.
USCGA remains his top choice but we are feeling less hopeful for an EA appointment by 12/23 and think that a deferral to regular admission is more likely (he’s a reapplicant - self prep- and we heard that many of those kids don’t get their appointment until spring)

His AO knows that he has a medical DQ from dodmerb so no appointment until March means possibly no medical waiver until May! so DS is trying to be proactive with backup plans.

Is it appropriate to inform his AO about the nominations? Just thinking maybe the CGA would hurry up and give him his appointment because this mom is dying over here (from this past year of waiting!) 🤪

No need to do that. SAs expect their candidates to be applying to other SAs and ROTC programs. Coast Guard has its own criteria, methods and pace in annual class-building.

Someone can correct me, but I thought that reapplicants can only apply RA. USCGA wants to see 1st semester grades. So there wouldn’t be a decision before 12/23.

We were conflicted with this about sport offers - we were told not to tell other coaches about different offers to other

I heard this as well!

Congrats to your son! Is he in a civilian college for one year or one of the prep programs? Did he find out why he didn’t get in to CGA last year? My son will likely reapply if it doesn’t work out this time around took. Best of luck!

He applied last year during regular admission pretty close to the deadline and was rejected. He is at a SA prep school as a non-sponsored USCGA cadet. He was advised to apply early action, as were the other non-sponsored cadets down there, but it sounds like only one of them has received an appointment so far. If anyone has questions about going the non-sponsored route and reapplying next cycle, feel free to send me a message.

Re-applicants must go RA for the simple reasons that they won't have any college grades nor would they have any substantial relationships at a new school by October 15. Plus USCGA wants to see proof of success at the next level, and that takes more than a month to demonstrate: living away from home, finding ways to demonstrate leadership in a new environment, sustaining academic performance over a long period, staying out of trouble, generally proving they're better than their high school record might have suggested. That's not to say that all college apps come from people who also applied in high school, but if you're one of those maybe start thinking this way when planning your college activities. If your first attempt didn't get you in then look at what needed improvement and find ways to strength that, be it grades, leadership or better essays.

Did he have a meeting with his AO last year to find where his weaknesses were?

They talk

Yes, they talked on the phone. Feedback was to improve PFE score (his score was average), continue demonstrating leadership, strong grades, extracurriculars. The recommendation was for prep school so that’s the route he took.

And I should clarify in my initial post when I mentioned USCGA “giving” him his appointment. Didn’t mean for it to come off that way. Definitely something that needs to be earned!

I’m surprised they thought that was low! That seemed to be an average score at AIM. My son trained this summer and got it up to 250 but had a 225 at AIM.
