Is NROTC for me?

Hi,

I was just looking to get some information regarding NROTC programs from everyone here. I’m currently enrolled in my college’s NROTC program not on scholarship. Tomorrow, I take the Oath of Office. As someone who doesn’t quite know what I want to do with my life when I grow up, I’m not sure if NROTC is the right path for me.Becoming a doctor might be somewhere in the mix, which I know isn’t ideal for wanting to do NROTC.

I was wondering if it’s possible to do NROTC for a year to figure out if that’s what I want to do and then drop out if I decide to peruse med school? Would I be able to do that? Would I owe the Navy anything? Can I drop after taking the Oath of Office?

Sure - Since you are not on Scholarship, you can join the NROTC Battalion at your school, try it out and see if it is a good fit. Take some time and talk with the staff at your NROTC unit and I am sure they can answer all of your questions about a career path. You are not obligated to the navy until you actually contract.

As long as you are not on scholarship, or advanced standing, you can drop at any time. Even midshipmen on scholarship can drop anytime freshman year with no obligation. Hope you find NROTC as rewarding as my son did.
