January 4, 2011 AROTC Board

Congratulations TrpRmom. It looks like the long wait for so many in this board may be ending. To add to some other comments, the communication sequence last year was (and it seems similar in the Oct board this year):

1. Portal changes to the "DODMERB" message. This means you have some type of scholarship.

2. About 3 days later the portal updates to tell you where the scholarships are to.

3. About a week after (1) a letter arrives telling you what type of scholarship has been awarded (4 or 3 year) to each school.
 
I just got 2 excited phone calls. It was thrilling to be on their quick call list. Two of the kids i know just had their status page change!!! They both had our state schools only on their lists so it will be exciting to see where they go.
 
Congratulations to those that are seeing the DoDMERB message on the website status page. My son's status still reads that he has been selected for an interview. At what point should I start to assume he wasnt awarded anything?
 
DS just changed as well to "check the DODMERB website" We thought something was up because back in Jan. AROTC showed up on the DODMERB portal and said "qualified". SOOOO wanting to know where it is to. Texas A&M called the other night and asked him what his first choice of ROTC was and he told them AF....opps. He got denied for AF so my thinking is it is more then likely them or hopefully Embry Riddle but from what the blogs have been saying is that it is full. GRRRRR. The waiting continues........

Good luck to everyone else....Does anyone know the phone number to DODMERB to call them up?:eek:
 
My son's status changed too. Just want to say good luck to everyone who may not have heard anything yet, we're all pulling for you.
 
I broke down and contacted someone who should know what is going on. Here's what I learned:

1. Scholarships being released today are 4yr only -- 3yr will be released after March 8 board. Congrats to all!!

2. AROTC is releasing only about 10% today of what is normally released. Those who are not in the 10% will get rolled over to the next board. This means that 90% of us who have been patiently waiting will have to wait longer.

3. There is apparently enormous political pressure right now from ivy league schools looking to restart their ROTC programs. One admissions officer even went to far to say that if it has two applicants, one seeking ROTC and the other NOT seeking ROTC, the one seeking ROTC will be admitted over the one who is not. The person I spoke with said this is directly from the mouth of the ivy league Dean of Admissions, not ROTC. Takeaway is that those applying for ivy league school have a distinct advantage if they are also applying for ROTC.

4. There is a push in the Army for more "cerebral" officers. My own assumption is that this is actually the Pentagon's way of legitimizing the response to the political pressure that is being applied by the ivy league schools, because I continue to believe that some of the best officers do NOT come from ivy league schools. Ask yourself, would Albert Einstein have made a good Infantry platoon leader?

5. This delay has been budget-related.

Great info.....I got the chills reading that the 4 year ones went out..... What a huge thing for our children!
 
Good info as always! If the staus has not changed and you know you made the board for Jan 4 does that mean that a scholarship was either:
A. Not awarded
B. Pushed to March board
C. Could change later today or tomorrow because they all do not upload at the same time
D. Start reading "The Power of Patience"

Don't call DoDMERB. They have nothing to do with the scholarship and won't have any information to give you. They are the Medical Review Board. They won't even be given the list of winners for a few days according to what I was told last year.
Cadet Command won't discuss anything with you until you have that paper in hand. They don't consider the offer official until you have that.

Sit tight or try and call one of the schools you are hoping for and see if they are willing to let you know something.

Thanks all! As has been cautioned before by others, intel is not the same as seeing the 4yr. offer IN WRITING. Intel is not infallible.

No. Person I spoke with said notices are rolling out by schools, not individuals. Also, host units are reporting that some schools in the command have received their alotments, while other schools falling under the same units have not. I would expect all notices will have gone out by Monday (but that's just a guess).

Last year it took a few days for them to input all the info. Not sure if with the number of offers loading into the system it will take less time this go round. But continue to check.

So know how you feel, DS has applied to AFROTC as well as NROTC and got the TWE for AFROTC......grrr and haven't heard about NROTC. Seems like a lot but he wants to serve his country and it has been a huge waiting came. Along with ROTC he also applied to the academy's and rec'd nomination to West Point as well as AFA but is still waiting.

This waiting game is harder on us parents...I just text my son at school and his response said "okay dokay" and he knows that I will do the stalking while he can concentrate on school. He's very calm...

The portals might be changing the entire day...you never know....

Remember, that allotment number can change after the acceptances have come in, Unless they are full from the first board and there is nothing left. If someone got offered the slot at this board along with other schools and hands it back, there will be an opening for the next board.
 
My DH contacted one of the schools on our DS's list. He was told that everyone was in a "scholarship meeting".

I hope the school will call or email as soon as they can!
 
Funny how the kids (always be our babies to us I am sure) are all calm and collected and I am frazzled wreck! Thanks for all the info :smile:

I can be calm. Really. I won't sit here all day long and keep checking the site. I am just going to wait patiently and maybe do a little shopping online.
