Out of State Student Scholarship Offer

I'm a DS that had their online status change and applied to all out of state schools. Today I received a call from the PMS at the University of Alabama (My 2nd choice school) informing me the details of my scholarship. I was offered a 3 year:smile:

I have a few questions about the January board:

1. Does anyone here really, Really, REALLY know how many scholarships were ultimately awarded from the January AROTC Board? I suspect the answer is "NO." (remember, the number "awarded" and the number "announced" are two ENTIRELY different things).

2. Could it be that the January board might have awarded approximately 500 scholarships as it did in November, but because of the uncertainty over the FY2011 budget, CC decided to release, say, only 50 this week, thereby placing the rest of those already "marked for award" on the "A" shelf and scheduled for release as soon as CC's budget numbers eventually become clearer? I suspect the answer is "IT'S POSSIBLE." (I really believe that CC is being very cautious right now, and it very well could be that the list of "50", or whatever number it was, was generated TOTALLY at random -- which would mean that there could be "oodles" of candidates with higher WCS scores who are STILL waiting to hear).

3. Are the folks who will not hear for another month better off than those who will hear this week? I suspect the answer is "YES." (the folks who will hear this week will have to do acrobatics over the next few weeks if they are not yet admitted to the school(s) that CC has selected for them).

4. Do we really, Really, REALLY know whether the scholarships that were released this time around were mainly 3yr. scholarships (remember, I think 3yrs. count on the FY2012 budget, not the FY2011 budget), but CC decided to withhold announcement of a majority of the 4yr. scholarships (which DO count on the FY2011 budget) until the budget picture for FY2011 becomes clearer? I suspect the answer is "NO." (recall that I placed a call on Thursday and was told that this was only 4yr. scholarships, but with hairyjewbear's comment above about receiving a 3yr, I may have received inaccurate information). (BTW, congrats, hairyjewbear!!!).

Does anyone know the answers to these questions? I don't. One thing I DO know, though, is that this is NOT a normal year.

One of the applicants that I know who was awarded the scholarship this past week has heard from their school. They also were awarded only one choice just like the above poster and it was a 3 year as well.
The other hasn't heard a thing yet and is anxiously waiting just like some of you all.

Congrats everyone who has heard from their schools! That blows the theory of what someone said earlier in the forum....someone said that all the ones that were offered this round were 4 year... Here's hoping that tomorrow we all find out which school our kids are assigned to!

It was much more than 50. There were over 20 pages with 15-20 names per page.

Of the applicants that I was tracking, 30% received 3 year scholarship offers. Most of these applied or completed their application after the last board. All of the 3 year offers that I saw were for more expensive schools. Of those that received the 4 year offer, there was about an equal number who applied early and late. Of those that received 4 year offers, some were for their first choice schools, some were for as low as their 6th choice. Its tough to draw a conclusion based on a small sample. One thing that stood out was that none of the applicants I tracked were given choices, while all of the applicants that received offers from the first board did receive choices.

Patentesq,

I believe the number was probably in the low 400s. I am not sure if CC is done updating yet. I will check again tomorrow and try to provide more solid numbers with more thorough analysis.

Thanks for the information, its a little more reassuring. Do you think we might find out where tomorrow? Maybe a call from the detachment?

Thanks, Marist. You're terrific. So I guess we're working with the number "low 400s" from the Jan. 2011 board, but I have a few more questions for you or clarksonarmy:

1. Is there any merit to my SWAG theory that CC is holding some awardees in abeyance? Or does everyone who doesn't hear by Tuesday get bumped to the next board?

2. Is it correct that 3yr. offers get counted in the FY2012 budget, not FY2011, because those awardees have to pay their own tuition for the first year of college?

3. Is 30% 3yr. offers normal? Or is this extraordinarily high in an unusual year?

4. I know you don't have a crystal ball, but do you expect to see a higher number of awardees from the March board (assuming Congress doesn't hack the POTUS proposed budget)?

5. Do any of the AROTC applicants ever receive a "ding" before the final board?

Is there anyone who received a scholarship willing to post their stats so others who are waiting can have a ballpark idea of how they stand.
ie. interview scores, sat, gpa, extracurricular activities, etc.
Thank you.

My DS - 1st board 4yr AROTC- he completed application very early, updated it often. 27 ACT, 3.33 GPA, Max interview, 4 Varsity letters, 20+hr/wk job, Student council, church group, very good PT, nice essay, volunteer work. applied to public unniversities, 3 offers. ---several of his teachers and coaches volunteered to and sent in letters of recommendations, I am curious if those ended up in his file or the circular file?

scholarship transfer

Does anyone know if a transfer of scholarship can be a possibility if our DS receives an offer to his second choice school instead of his first? We would not want to do anything to jeopardize his scholarship, but his first choice school has a degree he would like to pursue whereas his second choice does not have that degree. Thanks for any input.

Good question, TrpRMom. I was wondering the same thing.

If clarksonarmy or Marist College ROTC advise that transfers are still a possibility for 2010-2011 awardees (especially if the awardee is not admitted to the AROTC choice school), maybe we should start a new thread entitled "Tips For Transferring AROTC Scholarship." This question will likely be of interest to all the October, January, and March awardees and isn't specific to the January board. Folks from all three boards can then share their various experiences for transfer to help those who will go through this process next year.

I suspect our insider friends are a bit constrained right now on the amount of information they can share, at least until the letters go out to awardees (which I understand is supposed to happen today).

stat list for award

3.3 GPA
Max interview score
100 + hours volunteer VA
4 year Varsity
3 year team captain
26 ACT
OK PT score

School of Intent

If anyone has an answer about the Transfer policy, that would be great.

So far only one contact, waiting for letter, the award is to a great school...but my DD really wants a different school that has offered her alot of Merit scholarship.

The award was from her 3rd choice.
