January 4, 2011 AROTC Board

March 3

That would be very encouraging if they could get the last board results out by 4/1 as it would be a gift to all families involved so plans could be made. Also we would realize there was a method to their madness all along.

Hey, was just thinking about you last night, hadn't seen you post in a while. I'm beginning to wonder if CC started DodMERB early(also seems that other branches did too)and if the odd offers of only one/two schools to January board are calculated to have their decisions quicker and easier for CC to predict. I doubt that CC wants to hold up results for a formal board past the May 1 deadline imposed by so many schools. A few posts here on the thread indicate some schools received no offers from January, so I don't think CC wil try for us, the applicants and families, but maybe will try for the colleges/battalions so they don't freak out with not knowing either. Just a SWAG, but it could be:confused:

Take care

Jcleppe,

Thanks for your reply. I had taken into consideration that many of the service academy applicants would also apply for ROTC scholarships, but I never dreamed the odds would be so daunting. I hope my 17 year old really appreciates how fortunate he was, and that he does all he can to prove himself worthy.

what 17 year old has the type of life experience/perspective to know when he/she is fortunate? None, really. That's why, whether they admit it or not, they depend on us parents for their perspective!

FYI for January board scholarship recipients, my son's scholarship offer arrived in the mail today. Letter dated March 1st, reply required by March 31st.

March board??

I think it's time we start the March board don't ya think!?

I couldn't agree more. My son attends a fairly liberal high school, he has received quite a bit of flak for his decision to join ROTC from both friends and classmates, luckily he is a pretty strong willed kid and just brushes it off. He has followed his brothers progress through 3 years of AROTC and can't wait until next year. He has many times told us how fortunate he feels that everything worked out as he had planned, he knew the odds comming into this process and was realistic about his chances. He planned to enroll in AROTC whether he received the scholarship or not. I truely believe that most of the kids realize how lucky they are to be given the opportunity to attend school on an Army scholarship and go on to serve their country with honor.

Question

DD wants to be a Nurse. She received both AROTC and NROTC scholarships for nursing to different schools that both have excellent programs and to where she has been accepted. Question is, once she receives the scholarship letters, can she accept both scholarships for now, until she makes a final decision about which school to attend, or does she have to make this final decision right now and decline one of the scholarships? She is taking a second look at the schools in the next few weeks and should be finalizing her thoughts, but we just don't want to shut any doors until she is sure. Appreciate any thoughts.

Mail Came today

Just got the mail, and the scholarship offer is in the house. I'll let DS open when he get's home. Ironically the DOBMERB letter came today as well. He just completed the physical two weeks ago. Good Luck Everyone

Your daughter can accept both scholarships. The ROTC programs don't talk to each other. Just make sure she accepts the AROTC before the deadline. I'm not sure what the deadline date for the NROTC is, the deadline date for the AROTC is March 31st. Once she decides she just accepts one and declines the other. I believe she can hold on to the AROTC scholarship until May 1st when she will receive another letter confirming her decision, again I'm not sure about the NROTC dates. Again tell her to accept both.

Thankyou for the advice, that is very helpful.

Hudson Bay Rules

Hey, was just thinking about you last night, hadn't seen you post in a while. Take care

Hockey play-offs at our house which have been a good distraction but it's HUDSON BAY RULES now: doing whatever is needed on the ice to survive and make it to the next game. Guess it's a bit like that for the boards as well, although there's nothing one can really do at this point. A 4 minute mile and a 4.0 GPA today is too late so make sure you have a plan B, C and D in case the mailman doesn't bring that letter. For those who come behind take heed of the amount of planning that is needed.

Our son received the offical letter today dated March 1st.
Selection Status: Pending Medical Qualifcation and Academically Qualified.
Scholarship Tuition: Full Tuition
College/University: Norwich University 4 Year

Only one college was noted for the scholarship.
Acceptance date by March 31st.

Breathing a little easier now, just waiting to see if there are any medical issues.

I imagine there will be many letters opened tonight and tomorrow.
Good luck!

Glad you've been well, hockey would be a good distraction: I think DS would like to hit something really, really hard or have an excuse to have a fight break out:wink:

Yes, those coming for 2016 hopefully are paying attention. It appears even if you hit the whole SAL equation, pick the right school and follow thru like a pro, it may still not be enough. For those like my DS, who have no varsity letter, you probably shouldn't count on ROTC scholarships. Will have to see how the March board finishes, but that will be my big take away from all of this. It doesn't have to stop someone from having a military career as an officer, just changes how you get there.

Hope everyone opening the letters is getting good news and can now put their plans into action - wishing you all great things and passing DodMERB status:thumb:

A sobering thought for all the scholarship recipients: We just got back from a campus visit and we had a two hour chat with the ROO. He has a board with his 2010 freshman scholarship winners: 18 of them in total, and 9 were cut by December. Apparently its not uncommon for a large percentage to fall by the wayside. Incidentally, they have never lost a single cadet that was awarded an in-school scholarship.

That kind of highlights how flawed the current board selection process is!

How is it you don't see your whole posts unless you quote it? I was going to ask you to explain more about the "board" he has with his Freshman by December...just curious:confused:

now you're whole post shows up...I must have been able to see while you edited or something...weird.

I would imagine that a lot of the applicants that the ROO had on his list had listed other schools as well. I don't think it's very uncommon for a school not to get all the applicants that listed their school. My son was awarded the scholarship to 5 schools and he was on all the lists the ROO's had. Once he selected his school he would then be one of those applicants that fell to the wayside of the other ROO's lists. On the first board my son was one of three applicants that were selected at one of the schools, only one applicant out of the three selected that school. Not quite sure how that makes the system flawed.

Of course they don't lose any in school scholarships, they're only good for that particular school.

9 out of 18 that received 4 year national scholarships last year were booted out of the ROTC by December. Mainly for failing PFTs but some for academic failures.

He had a big board with numbers 1-18, and only nine names left on his board.

A white board BTW, not a AROTC board.....although the Army probably own his board.

Ok...now I understand what you were saying, makes perfect sense now. Sorry for the previous post.

That sure does seem like a lot, I see your point about the system. My son's batallion has only lost 1 in 3 years, and he quit on his own.

Email from #1 school

Our status on the army rotc website never changed from "You may check your medical qualification status by visiting the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board DoDMERB WebSite"

But we did receive an email from our sons #1 choice saying he would be receiving a scholarship.

So for those of you that are in a similar situation. Good news may be on the way. I will post what the letter says when we get it.

Thanks to all on this forum for all the good information
