I'm currently a sophomore in high school enrolled in AFJROTC 2 (Air Force JROTC). Unfortunately, I missed the deadline to sign up for NHS this year. Is it better to pursue JROTC and get a higher rank and leadership role, or should I go try and do both? I'm also doing two sports and taking advanced classes, so I'm trying to figure out how to do as many extracurriculars as I can without overstressing myself.

By "signing up" for NHS do you mean submitting an application with attached resume?

As a command cheif I have time to do both. I don't know what your corps requirements are however I've taken AP classes, and I'm varsity in two sports. Does it mean sometimes you have to decide what more important ( being late normally)? Yes but you can balance it. NHS at my school meets once a month and our hours are only 10 this year. I found that I could do JROTC as Cheif support officer, while in two AP classes, while doing two varsity sports while in two low maintenance clubs ( book club and spanish club-leader) and still earning A's.

Worst case you learn what you can handle this year for next year and you learn what you believe is more important to you. The only thing I highly recommend is if you do feel overwhelmed talk to your leadership and make sure your grades stay up. Grades play a huge role for not just the academy but your life as they show study habits.

Good luck! And stay down right motivated!

Nice to see such common sense peer counseling. Well done.
Please whack your spell-checker when it comes to “cheif,” a rank element that holds great importance to AF Chief Master Sergeants, Navy and Coast Guard Chief, Senior Chief and Master Chief Petty Officers, among others.

Judging from the time requirement of NHS, it doesn't seem like it would seriously harm me in any way.

It won't but you don't just walk in and join. Surely you would gain membership but one must first apply by the deadline. As a sophomore you can do it next year.

Thank you ma'am for some reason I always mess up chief even though I have to write it everyday for JROTC and emails. My apologizes!

😁 Just don’t do it around a living, breathing Chief in any service. Think of a mnemonic. When you write it, say “It’s not a ‘chef,’” which should cue you to remember the e follows the i in “chief.”

Another correction: You MADE the time, where there is a will, there is a way, etc.
Excellent advice, with themes of leadership in key activities and strategizing main vs. minor activities.

Advice to our OP (or in general, about NHS): Make sure to meet deadline next year, and go on your fact-finding mission now. Depending on schools, it can vary wildly! Older DD's was by application, and MANY did not get in, if they didn't have the "right" amount of leadership and volunteering. NO KIDDING! It was absolutely flabbergasting who got in and who didn't. My SA DD's did not have an application, and were picked by teachers.

Our HS send out the offer to those that meet the school’s criteria and then student must complete all application requirements for consideration.
