Just heard from Admissions Officer

Sanmam is right. About 50% of all Appointments come from EAs. And about 300 in total receive Appointments. Those not making EAs may not make regular round. So some suggested don’t apply EA unless one is absolutely confident can be competitive in the EA pool.

For the class of 2022 I recall (from admissions) EA Appointed candidate class average stats were:

ACT ENG 31, MATH 32
SAT (estimated recall) ENG 665, MATH 700+
GPA 3.8
Class Rank Top 10% (estimated recall)
PFE 241
AIM ALUMNI 50%
Varsity ~100% (guesstimate)
CPT/Leadership ~100% (guesstimate)
Scouting 50%+ (guesstimate)
total appointments to USCGA are about 310. About 220 of them are accepted. Statistics from EA and RA are posted each year by @Objee

This does not include CGAS appointments, which is where most of the rest of the incoming class comes from (60ish CGAS plus 10ish international students)

Here's a recent thread compiling EA statistics by class as provided by @Objee :

Korab. Thank you for sharing this. Those are impressive stats. CGA certainly has strong pools and incoming class every year!

Keep in mind those stats are just for EA offers, which are typically the most competitive. The overall class statistics will be a touch lower.

Interested readers should also take note that approximately 190 out 320 offers of appointment are made to early action applicants, which is 60%

This is not quite right. Total appointments hover around 400-425, making EA appointments about 40-45% of the total

This is directly from @Objee's snout:

The exact numbers can vary significantly from year-to-year, but on average:
2,200 Applications Submitted (applicants hit "Submit" button)
2,000 Applications Completed (all required application items received)
2,000 Applications Reviewed (all complete applications are reviewed)
800 Applications Recommended for Appointment Consideration (fully qualified applicants)
310 Appointments Offered (full appointments; not including CGAS Program graduates or deferrals)
220 Appointments Accepted (not including CGAS Program graduates or deferrals)

Those 220 weren't just EA tho. The funnel numbers which includes CGAS appointments were 433 for 2021, 390 for 2022, and 392 for 2023.

I never said the 220 was just EA. I said 220 total accepted appointments out of 310 total appointments (not including CGAS). I pasted my original post above.

Appointments to CGAS aren't appointments to the Academy. Appointments for kids who have completed CGAS are an entirely different animal. New applicants aren't in consideration for their spots, so it wouldn't make sense to include those spots in the total number of spots available to new applicants.

There have historically been approximately 190 out of approximately 310 total appointments offered in EA. This number doesn't include CGAS. This is actually 61.29% of all appointments to the Academy (not including CGAS). I somehow replaced 310 with 320 when I calculated the number before.

I've mentioned this before, but never received any elaboration. The biggest "cut" in the overall review process is here:

2,000 Applications Reviewed (all complete applications are reviewed)
800 Applications Recommended for Appointment Consideration (fully qualified applicants)

What I would love to know is what the criteria are to be considered "fully qualified." Once you get there, if I read the numbers right, statistically it looks to be about 50% will get either a full appointment offered or a CGAS offer.
A separate, but related, question is: of the roughly 700-900 EA applicants, how many are considered "fully qualified?" My guess is probably most, which would explain why 60+% of all full appointments offered come from the EA bin.

Are CGAS (Prep School) appointments released on a rolling basis or all at once at the very end (23 DEC this year) of the EA process?

In general, CGAS appointments are at the end of the Academic year. When my son was there most were given a week or two before CGAS graduation. There were a few handed on the day of graduation. A few have been given mid-year, but I think those were self-preps. Operative words there "I think".

In the past CGAS appointments have been offered throughout the application process -- 39 offered during EA in 2017.

12/22/2017:
Early Action for the Class of 2022....
These Early Action statistics have been approved for release and we're looking forward to bringing in another great class!
834 Applicants
189 Appointments
39 CGAS Appointments

Are you referring to appointments from kids already in CGAS or kids receiving an offer of the CGAS program? I think OP was asking about the latter, which have traditionally been offered sporadically throughout the appointment period, but are definitely clustered at the end of the EA, then again at the end of the RA period.

Looks like you answered my original question are offers for appointment to CGAS made all at once at end of EA cycle. Thanks.

In the past there have been some sporadic CGAS appointments earlier on in the cycle, but this year everything is so compressed that I wouldn’t expect anything until the end, which is only 10 days away!

Korab got it. Sorry. My son's appointment to CGAS came on 10 December. And it came in a TWE which caused a minor heart failure. But was a positive. I heard him yell from the other side of the house.

As an aside, when he did Cadet for a Day, the dining table he sat at had a cadet who was prior CGAS. She told him if he got CGAS instead of direct appointment to take it, not feel slighted. We asked him later if he would take it if he got it. He said in a heart beat. And he did.

My DS met many people at the academy who went there via CGAS. In every case they were impressive cadets who said they benefitted from the experience.

I am assuming that was not 10 DEC as in a few days ago? :eek3:
