Hello everyone!

I'd like to start off by saying that I don't expect any of you to know my exact chances of getting into the United States Merchant Marine Academy as an engineer, I'm merely looking for my acceptance chance range with my credentials. They are nothing special, however I am a junior attending a relatively well-known naval high school that I believe will help increase my chances of getting accepted. However I am not sure, so if someone could answer this it would be greatly appreciated.

My credentials as a current high school junior are as follows:
3.9 weighted GPA
1150 SAT
1 AP (planning to take 3 my senior year)
1 Dual Enrollment
Rest of classes throughout my high school career are vast majority honors
Petty Officer 3rd Class at my high school
Varsity Wrestling 3 years (made to at least regionals all years so far)
Drone Club (2 years)
Wood Working Club (1 year)
Apprenticeship with engineer (3 summers)
Recurring Blood Donator
3D printed ear protectors for nurses during coronavirus outbreak
Multiple 5k runs for charity
A voluntary fundraiser for ASPCA
Volunteer meal distributor for church (3 summers)
Qualified Boat Handler Certified
Autodesk Certified (3D modeling)
Experienced waiter at a country club
First mate for a yacht (one charter included Dak Prescott & the Dallas Cowboys)

These are most of my credentials as I am quite tired at the moment. If you have any questions, I will be happy to answer. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. Have a nice day. :)

Your SAT is a little low. Do you have the breakdown? Math would be more critical.
Did you reach out to the wrestling coach?
Do a lot of Khan Academy and retake the SAT. Otherwise it looks pretty good.
You will also have to get a nomination from a senator or rep.
But of course have a plan B. 20% more or less is pretty tough.

I accidentally typed the wrong score. My math was a 610 and my reading was a 520.
I have not reached out to the wrestling coach yet as I am not sure if I want to wrestle in college.
Thanks for the Khan Academy advice. :)

Weakness is definitely your SAT score. You need to get it at least to 1300. Also, it would be great if you can be captain of your wrestling team next year. I understand not wanting to continue wrestling in college. Both my sons were accomplished high school wrestlers, and were very happy not to worry about making weight after that. Kings Point has an excellent wrestling program if you are interested. Now is a good time to email the coach if you are. Good luck.

Thank you very much. Do you think going to a military high school increases my chances of getting in?

Not at all. But it will certainly help you with the adjustment to the military part of Kings Point once you are there. You will also be able to help your classmates with that kind of stuff if that is your strength, and they in turn will help you with your weak areas.

Since I'm a junior and with the whole crisis going on, I'm not able to take the SAT again until after I apply, let alone after I get accepted. Do you have any more tips that could help me? Such as advice for nominations or applying in general?

Start early so you can get your CFA and DoDMERB done by October. If any issues arise you will have time to address them. Also, when you ask your recommenders for a reference, be sure to give them a good resume to work from. You can take practice SAT's and work on your resume now.

There are SAT dates available in August, September, and October, etc. I definitely think the best tip that everyone has been telling you is to retake it. Again and again and again if you have to.

Upload your SAT to Kahn and put the August test date in and it will make a plan for you. Focus on the Math. Follow the plan and be disciplined about it. Practice at least 5 days a week for 20-30 minutes and take the practice tests it gives you. You'll definitely see an increase in your score.

Good luck to you!

Kings Point Class of 2023 reported to the Academy on Friday, 05 July 2019. The following is a brief on SAT: 1278 SAT (ERW: 632 Math: 646) If you go to the following link you can read about the last four classes....

Class Profile | U.S. Merchant Marine Academy

My advice would be to focus on raising your math score. ..
Good Luck!

I am going into the class of 2024. I went into my nomination interviews with a low math ACT and all they wanted to talk about was my scores. Number one priority should be your standardized test scores. Working on nominations you should think about why you want to go to the academy. When you think about this be truthful and honest. This is a huge commitment. Number two is dodmerb. I started in December and ended in March. Work on getting your application done ASAP.

I would recommend retaking you SATs. I would also recommend taking the ACTs. Finally I would recommend taking a SAT prep course. Spend the money and take a professional course of instruction. Even if you spend $1,000 it’s a small investment for a $250,000 education.

Currently your verbal score is below the minimum for acceptance. There are some exceptions to the minimum score.

As per 46 CFR 310.55
Minimum qualifying scores on the entrance examinations will be determined by the Superintendent of the Academy for each entering class prior to any offers of appointment for the particular class. Any score below the minimum on any one section of an examination shall make the nominee ineligible for admission.

I also highly recommend not using last years class profile as a guide. It is important to remember that each state has a limited number of appointments.
You are competing not only against students in your district but also within your own state.

You also have the ability to make the national wait list but a reminder is then you are competing against everyone across the nation.

You should shoot for 1400 on your SATs or 34 on ACT. If you’re not taking calculus as a senior you should.

IMHO....NO....focus on raising your SAT MATH Score.... play a sports that they offer and be willing to play that sport at Kings point...

There's an online calculator that gives you the chance of you being accepted purely based on your SAT/ACT and GPA. https://www.prepscholar.com/sat/s/colleges/United-States-Merchant-Marine-Academy-SAT-scores-GPA

Just curious as to what the exceptions might be for the lower than established minimum scores.

Thanks!
