I have heard the academy issues laptops. What kind are they giving right now? Is there a scheduled change any time in the near future?

Thanks,
USAFA Hopeful

a fujitsu tablet, dual core, 4 gigs of ram iirc

I don't remember the exact specs

Thanks for the reply. Do you bring these with you to all of the classes or do they stay in the dorm?

Are cadets issued entirely new ones each year?
Sorry for so many questions, this will (hopefully) be my last one.

You will keep the one that you get as a 4 degree for the entire 4 years that you are there. You actually purchase the computer with your deducted funds during your first two years there, and it is yours to keep after the Academy. In fact, one of the things that I asked our Firstie about as a grad present was a new laptop. He said he was happy with the one that he got at USAFA and didn't need a new one.

Is it beneficial maybe to have 2 computers for any reason? I got a new laptop because I wasn't expecting to get in, but I did get in! So, now do I have a new laptop that is going to go to waste?

Two computers doesn't really help or hurt. It might end up being a nuisance if you do work on both though.

DS25 needed a desktop as a 2 deg to simultaneously a CFD program, matlab, and his homework, along with two monitors. DS27 will need the same. The laptops are fine, but lack the oompf to run some of the aero software.

My son's issued laptop has been adequate for his classes, and he is an aero engineering major.

He chooses to keep his personal links and interests on his own personal laptop. In addition they are not allowed TVs I believe in their first 2 years in their room so he uses the personal laptop to watch movies on.

Over the years I have learned to keep two iPads and two laptops, one for professional use and one for personal use. It's just smarter that way.

I have a personal computer that I use for school work now, am I able to use this one or am I forced to buy the academy issued computer?

Not sure you are forced to purchase by if you want to use your current machine at all, for whatever reason, they will need to install security software on your machine.

You need to use the one issued because you won't be allowed to get your machine on to the military network. My DD (at CGA) uses her iPad for note taking in class and her issued machine for programming work and school email / applications. (To clarify: you can get your own devices on the internet in the dorms, but my understanding is there are places it can't go.)
