Late April decision release

I don't believe there is any such status as "waitlisted". Two years ago, they had a similar message that all would hear by 4/21. My DS was waiting and assuming he was headed to his plan B. That morning came and most on this forum reported a TWE that morning-- except several of us didn't. Our portals hadn't changed and we didn't know what to make of it. There was a lot of chatter and conjecture. Late that night, around midnight, I was working on my laptop and my DS came home and asked if we could look one more time at his portal before he headed to bed. I humored him, not thinking there would be any change. We went there together and were dumbfounded. His status had changed from "Candidate" to "Appointee"-- by the next morning, we had gotten the email to check the portal and his appointment letter was there. All the others on the forum who didn't get the TWE on the 21st either got an appointment in the coming days or a falcon scholarship/prep offer. They still made appointments into May.

Thank you for this

I'm an ALO and USAFA/RRS has not informed us that there's a "date for the last slug..." of anything: offers, rejections, etc.

They typically will say "...by this date we will have made the vast majority of offers and will begin notifying non-selects" but that's it.

Those messages are not published for general information.

I have no idea if any deadline was given this year. I can assure you that two years ago, 4/21 was given as the date one could expect to "hear by" on the portal after you signed in. This statement on the portal was added in early April that year.

Just a few curiosities... Have many TWEs gone out in the past couple of weeks or will most who haven't heard get them all at once? Have Prep and Falcon scholarship offers been trickling out as well as appointments or do those get offered after the majority of the TWEs? Been refreshing and seeing the same screen since March. Still holding out hope for DS. Thanks!

My two cents, after 25+ years as an ALO...

If you haven't received an offer by now...the odds are VERY long against it happening. Initiate Plan B, but keep watching the portal "in case."

When USAFA/RRS sent out the big group of offers in March, they included offers for the PS and FFS.

Thanks for this, nice to have an insider tell it how it is. Already starting next year's application, time to bring it around again!

Dear Sir (Steve) @flieger83,
Could you please advise me as a parent_abroad (more than 17 years away from USA) if it's more difficult for his teenage son to secure an appointment? If so, do you have any advise for us to share with him to improve his chances of getting it next year? He had high scores of 1420 for his SATs but Covid-19 deprived him of his chances to engage in more Leadership related co-curicullar activities in high school abroad.

Does this include candidates still in a waiver process as our DD was emailed on Monday needing AMI. Thank you for your guidance!

I know I'm not who you asked but I'm in a similar situation. I've been in the PH for 4 years and covid restrictions have made just about everything activities wise impossible over the last two years. I had a similar SAT score as well. It did not seem to have a large impact that my last two years here are basically an empty slate in activities. I explained the situation however during the interview a few months ago.

COVID restrictions have hampered candidates worldwide. I think they key there, from my local experience, is: what did you do that you could do while under the restrictions? Some candidates did nothing at all. That's fine, if they were in an area that was almost completely locked down; it wasn't in their control. Others...

Is it more difficult for a candidate abroad to receive an appointment? I haven't seen any evidence of that in my time as an ALO. I've seen LOTS of candidates from all over the world receive appointments. The challenges are usually the nomination interviews and then the time difference for submitting things to USAFA or to respond to inquiries. Again, that being said; when I sat on my MOCs nomination board, we convened at odd hours to interview candidates for nomination from countries in Europe and Asia. The key is being flexible and proactive.

As for "leadership opportunities" the key is to be flexible and become involved in things that are available and interesting to you. The answers to questions, explanations of the challenges of being a student abroad, how he adapted and overcame those challenges to continue his quest. Those will be big ticket items. It might actually be an advantage if phrased well..."I had to adapt to XXX due to host nation laws. To continue my .....I....." That could have strength. Also, does he have any language skills? That can be emphasized as well as his ability to work in a culturally/ethnically diverse environment.

He should be like any other candidate.

Excellent question and the straight answer is: I don't know. I could speculate but that's all it would be. I would think that a candidate under waiver review would fall into a different category...but that's just speculation.

Folks
I would say it’s over. We will be officially notified that it’s over tomorrow apparently, although nothing is for certain. If we haven’t received an appointment by now we ain’t getting one. They just have to let the rest of us know “thank you but we don’t have a spot for you”. It is what it is at this point.

well it was a good run. But it's not completely over until they officially deny you but I get why you're feeling like hope is lost. Nothing we can do now but wait and hope for nothing tomorrow. Although, I have a bad feeling that tomorrow will be a day of a lot of rejections

I'm curious as to your source for tomorrow being a "special" day?

I just reviewed my ALO communications from March 24th to now...there's no "date for sending out mass non-select messages." Perhaps in the past April 21st was a day that happened, I don't know. However, I do know that while the majority of offers have been made, USAFA/RRS has not informed the ALO force of a "mass non-select" date.
