Letter of Assurance

My daughter received an email at the end of February saying she had been accepted to the Naval Academy basically as long as she keeps her grades up.

Something is missing here....did she receive an Offer of an Appointment ? Did she accept ?
I recommend that you read the letter carefully -- there really shouldn't be any ambiguity in Admission's correspondence.
If in doubt, call Admissions.

This is my first post and I’m hoping to get some clarification. Thank you for any help. My daughter received an email at the end of February saying she had been accepted to the Naval Academy basically as long as she keeps her grades up. Her status in the system did not change to Offer Extended but to Letter of Assurance. It was my understanding that LOAs are given out early and are similar to early acceptances for regular schools. She has a nomination but is not her MOC’s principal nomination. Could this be the reason for the LOA? She would be participating in a varsity sport at USNA. Thank you for any help.

Hang in there. With a nom (any flavor) and LOA, as long as everything else remains a go, she should be in good shape to get an offer. No real connections between LOAs and noms. She’s got the “save the date” letter to the ball, she just needs the engraved invitation. Her nom does show up in her portal, right?

At this time, all the SA Admissions staffs are madly involved in the complex administrative processes related to managing all the details of updating portals with a range of responses - appointments offered, items pending, denials, wait list - for all classes of candidates, from high school, NAPS, Foundation, self-preppers, college applicants and re-applicants, enlisted direct applicants, international... They are managing phone calls and emails from applicants and all others involved from the Academy side (coaches, etc.). Meanwhile, the mechanism for 2023 is being greased and starting to gear up, as the next round of NASS starts. Stats, details, checklists for each 2022 candidate are being double-checked before the go signal is given for the portal update. Data snapshots are regularly being taken to show how the class is taking shape from every imaginable perspective.

I agree that something is missing. Typically, LOAs are given in February ONLY if the candidate has a medical issue that needs time to resolve (e.g., healing from an injury, being off medication for a time) and the issue is anticipated to resolve prior to I-Day. This essentially means the candidate has an appointment, provided the medical issue does resolve.

I suppose it COULD mean that they are going to give her an appointment but have not yet decided to whom to charge her. However, that seems unusual to me.

I suggest your DD contact her Regional Director for clarification.

Thank you, Capt. MJ for your response. I just thought it was pretty late to get an LOA, but we are very grateful!

LOA

Most of that was my understanding also except that it does not require a nomination. My understanding is that you would still need the nomination but that some MOC use this as a tool to determine who they will give their nomination to. In fact, one of the Senators here states on his package that he wants to be informed if the candidate receives an LOA.

My question then is "What makes a candidate exceptional?" that they are awarded an LOA.
My understanding is that regardless, one needs to be Nominated from any nomination source the individual is eligible. Same for NAPSters and Foundation candidates.

It is better to start a new thread then tack onto something from several years ago (2009 in this thread). The responses can get jumbled, since it may not be clear which questions are being replied to and most participants from 9 yrs ago are no longer active here.

When DS’s noms were received (2 principal’s, one ranked) he quite quickly received a “conditional offer of appointment”, letter of assurance, pending completion of one item (a body fat test performed and sent in) in his portal. So he technically had an LOA, however nothing formally received stating so other than those word in that sentence. And it was for a very short time. It was changed to “appointment “ within a few days (form was printed and returned within 24 hrs). It really doesn’t matter, but IG he had a LOA. So LOA’s can be for anything, and amount of time varies.
Thank you for sharing your son’s experience. I think what is unsettling is tha

Tha k you for your response. She received a Letter of assurance and the only think she doesn’t have checked off is the Medical. I believe it is because the DODMERB system is apparently down. Maybe she got the late Conditional Appointment/LOA because they wanted her to hang on? She has had the physical it just isn’t showing up in DODMERB. So the required action is “medical clearance” with no special instructions. She is calling Asmissions today.

....and that hence the LOA. She isn't completely qualified as her DODMRB piece isn't completed....and be patient with that as it can take time. Additionally, there could be additional information needed to clear DODMRB. Congrats!
