I will be attending MMI as a sponsored cadet. What is the lifestyle like @ Marion for a SAP cadet? (PT,academics, social life)

Well, you will be spending a year in the best state in the union. Take advantage of college game day in auburn or tuscaloosa when you can.

PT - SAP cadets usually do pretty simple pt like running, pushups, all that good stuff. They also do swim PT every now and then. Of course you can run and workout all you want on your free time.

Academics - Pretty much what you would expect from a college. The staff is great and the courses will challenge you.

Social Life - Marion is a small town with the nearest walmart about a 30 minute drive. We all get along pretty well on campus and people are always going to Tuscaloosa (T-Town)

mid101- where are you from? Are you a sponsored cadet for the Navy, or Air Force? My son will be attending Marion as an un-sponsored cadet along with several others on this forum. He will be re-applying to the Naval Academy as well as applying to the other academies at the advice of Col Lewis and Col Molahan .

Good Luck!

Greetings mam,

I'm from Connecticut, I will be sponsored by the Naval Academy's Foundation.

mid101..Just curious, did they tell you what you were weak in? My DS was seeking an appointment to the NA and did not get in this year. His package was very strong but evidently someone else in our area was stronger. Just curious as to what they look for when they pick the ones that are sponsored. Col Lewis did call and check for my DS to see it there were anymore foundation scholarships available, but they had been all taken. So He is un-sponsored. Good luck to you. My DS will be in the SAP program so I am sure you will run into each other.

I recieved a letter from the foundation stating that I was being offered a spot in their program. They did not explicitly tell me that my application was weak but I am guessing that the admissions board felt that I needed an extra year of academic instruction to become a more competitive candidate for admission.

Anybody know where I could find more info on the schedule for Aug 10 at MMI? Our DS reports that day, and we have a dinner the night before. The website has all kinds of info on Parents Weekend in October, but very little with regard to the 10th.

Mostly wanting to know what to expect timewise, as in: is it a morning drop off and we parents are on our way or should we plan on staying in the area through the 11th?

a link or general info would be greatly appreciated.

SAP students can report in any time between 0800 and 1200. While I don't have the final schedule, in essence your son can be checked in and you can help him move his stuff in. He'll be escorted through the campus to uniform issue and haircuts, as well as to his room. In the afternoon he'll participate in some initial training. There will also be a meeting for parents and family with the President, Commandant, and Dean that afternoon.

The final event of the evening is a reception for the students and their families held by the executive VP. It should be in the late afternoon going until around 1900-2000. After the reception the students will be marched back to their barracks where the training can begin in ernest. The reception is a good time to meet the faculty and staff. I highly recommend you stick around the evening of the 10th.

The information provided above from physicsguru is correct. My son was at MMI last year and is now at USAFA. You will want to stay until the 11th if you are from out of town. Unlike the Academies, you will be able to go through processing with your DS or DD. You can meet there roommate and stay with them for a good portion of the day. A lot of kids had parents with them, some did not. Some even brought extended family! Best of Luck to you!
