Can you get a letter of assurance without submitting CFA scores? I am still working towards that, but I am almost done with the rest of the application. I am waiting on one more SOE and finishing up my essays.

You can get an LOA at any time. But as mentioned here many times before, don’t count on it. Eyes on the real prize: the offer of appointment itself.

Chances of a LOA at this point on the timeline are slim. Focus should be on submitting the best application you can, nominations and appointment. Anything else is just wasting time.

Staying off the forums can also help you sleep. Seriously, after you are all submitted, spend your time celebrating your last semester of your k-12 education with your friends. Senior year is special. Be present.

Omg it drives me crazy too 😂

My friend who commissioned out of USMA in 2019 had a 35 ACT and was ranked in the top 20 students of his 500 person class. He didn't get an LOA.

That helps me sleep at night 😂
That helped me out a lot LOL

I’m pretty sure you can because I received one just recently without me having to submit my CFA scores yet. Everything else in the application was done though except the medical

HAHA! I already am. I'm just really nervous about it, like I see so many people saying they have an LOA.

This goes for any academy. An LOA is not the end goal. The appointment is the real prize. Every year a very small percentage of applicants receive one and a much larger amount of applicants who receive appointments don’t. Do not get caught up in a “LOA” because ultimately it is not necessarily worth much except peace of mind. The appointment is what you need to work towards! Hundreds of people without LOAs receive appointments. It just may seem like a huge amount have them because most of the early appointments are applicants with one. And remember, the SAF is a very small sampling group, it doesn’t give you a glimpse into the thousand or so people who are offered appointments.

I saw a thread somewhere that about 100-200 candidates received LOAs but the statistics vary each year.

It means that approximately 1,000+ candidates got their offers without LOAs.

I am just relaxing and enjoying my winter break. :)

I always thought that LOA sounds like LOL. :)

If we really want to Beat Navy or Army (your preference), we really should Beat DoDMERB AND an Illusion over LOA.

LOL

Yes, LOAs are very rare indeed. None of my kids ever got one. Sort of mythical in our family. Congrats to all who did! Something special to be proud of!!

The SA's are very different in how each handles LOA's.

USMA gives very few LOA's to candidates that are not recruited athletes or minorities. Most candidates will not get an LOA no matter how good their test scores or grades.

How many LOAs are given by USNA, USMA, and USAFA?

How do we see the breakdown between recruited athletes, minorities and others?

The SAs do not publish the number of SAs they hand out every year, nor do they provide a breakout of who gets one. As has been mentioned in many threads on this forum cadet candidates should not worry about getting an LOA. If you get one then congratulations, but if you do not then don’t despair. The appointment is what matters most.

To my knowledge the SA's do not publish statistics about LOA's.

From a USMA Regional Commander (about 5 years ago):
  • Most LOA's go to recruited athletes (very frequently) and minorities (not in all cases)
  • LOA's to "regular" candidates are determined by the RC
  • Most RC's use them very little and some do not use them at all
  • USMA does not use LOA's as much as USNA; posts on this forum seem to support that

Agree with the thread and want to add: WP LOAs are a way of saying, "we like what we see so far, and PLEASE GET OFF YOUR XXX AND COMPLETE YOUR FILE!" Nothing guaranteed...
