I just received an LOA for the CO 2025 as a college applicant. I am currently not worried about the nomination or the physical component, but I have a chem course where the average grade is a D (mine is a D+), and I still have the option to withdraw from the class. I have been putting in crazy amounts of time into trying to improve my grade, meeting with the professor, and working with a tutor, but the class is simply not going well. All of my other classes are going extremely well. With this being said, if I were to withdraw from the chem course would this be grounds for losing my LOA?

I would say no but I think that when they give you an LOA it says something like based on your application they have reserved a spot for you in the class of 2025. For that reason I'd say your application is okay but just try and get it up obviously.

Suggest you ask admissions directly. Get the scoop directly from the source, rather than from us well-intentioned yet innocent bystanders. You have an LOA, so frankly nothing to lose by asking the question.

But as someone who teaches at the college level, and if you were my kid, I’d say “Get your butt in gear. There’s plenty of semester left!”

I completely understand what you are saying, but I am genuinely concerned about the course. The teacher does not curve and almost a quarter of the class last year did not pass.

Understood, but doesn’t change the nature of my advice. Get the answer directly from the primary source.

Also, I’m sure you know that cadets are required to pass two core Chemistry courses. The USMA versions will likely not be easier than what you’re taking now, what with the addition of military obligations and athletic requirements. So fighting through this, rather than quitting, should serve you well and be great preparation and a tremendous confidence builder for USMA.

I think Khan Academy has some online chemistry courses. Perhaps that might be helpful
