Yeah, I would agree and give them a call ASAP. I think this would be prudent to avoid being turned away and being disappointed.
Whats cool about an over night visit, your DS will be assigned, mostly likely to a Yearling, who has asked to take on this responsibility. The Cadet must be in good standing. Your DS will be referred to as a "drag" while he gets a chance to see the inside. Have your DS take some home work, PT clothes and ask questions. He'll have the opportunity to interact in class rooms and with other Cadet.
When your DS has completed his visit, he'll have the opportunity to meet with admissions and review his file. In my opinion this is the nugget for the visit.
As a nice gesture, have your son give his Cadet escort a gift card from Grant Hall. I wouldn't give homemade or store bought baked goods. Most Cadets are very health conscience and watch their weight
If you're going with him its a nice time to take the two hour tour- walk over to trophy point (read a book, enjoy the view, tour the cemetery and Old Cadet chapel). Take a history book about West Point and learn about the importance of the longest operational US military post. You'll enjoy it too

When is the best time to visit? Would December or mid January be good?
