Hey guys. Going to be brief and get to the point.

Completed application in October, learned I was medically DQd in early January. Was a DQ that could go either way in the waiver process, so we’ve all been incredibly stressed about it.

Received LOA in late January. Tonight, DODMERB portal shows “Waiver Granted” and a check mark by Medical in CIS. Still shows LOA, but I know that takes about a week to update.

Haven’t told a soul, (except a conversation with my BGO) and want my parents to be first. Should I want until a phone call from my nom source? Until an official appointment is sitting in the portal? And when I do tell them, how should I do it? I’ve thought of buying a flag, or other apparel for them. Or should I throw all that out the window, go wake them up and tell them tonight? To all the parents out there, what would you suggest!?

Want this to be as special for them as it is me, because I couldn’t be here without them.

Any ideas are appreciated.

I’ve been pulling for you from day one. Your screen name got me 100%. Now I’m in tears.

You are so sweet to consider them in this and make it special for them. I wouldn’t need apparel or pennants. I would just want to celebrate my kiddo’s amazing achievement.

I agree with @A1Janitor run down the hallway and wake them up.

Then tell us how it went.

Just another idea here. I like surprising people. Why don't you wait to the very last minute where your parents can't stand the waiting any longer. Then nonchalantly ask them if they could visit you in August for Plebe Parent's Weekend. See if they put two and two together. Try and pull this off on April 1st or when they least expect it. Only the best to you.

+1 for run down the hall and wake them up!! But first go to 7-11 and get a box of Chips Ahoy and make them guess why you are insisting they wake up for that!

You’re a sadist!!!!!! But this is also a super cool idea.

Yes, 💯 Bravo Zulu. Your comments and questions on the forum were always composed very succinctly and very politely. You supported others here and responded to those who offered support. Class act. I see good things in your future.

Keep us posted.

Congrats! Wake them up!

Thank you everyone for the replies. I went and told them, and there was a mix of shock, excitement, and a few tears. Part of me still doesn’t believe I actually got a waiver and am in.

I think I’m going to wait until I have an official phone call/portal update before I tell EVERYONE. But very glad I told my parents when I did. Thank you to everyone for the replies in and for the regulars who are always on here helping out kids like me.

Thank you for the kind words and support.

I love it when a plan comes together.

Now you get to take a deep breath, and exhale.

Take a day or more to soak it in and settle yourself in this new world that awaits you, and your family.

I’m grateful you included us and kept us updated.

Darn, late to the party in reading this post, but great news - I would have said run down the hall but sneak into their room and start up “Anchors Away” or “Blue and Gold” sung by the USNA Glee Club at max volume on your phone.

Shoot also missed all the fun!

For the record, I would have waited and placed an appointment letter/email on their dinner plate. Or recorded the MOC notification (if received) and nonchalantly played a ‘hey I got a weird VM, what do you think??’ loudly.

Doesn’t matter. You can still do that. Shock them over and over. It will take them (and you) a LONG time for it to sink in.

CONGRATS 🎉🎊!!

Also too late but congrats.

One approach would have been to go on line and find USNA related tshirts or hats——-something like——“Mid Parents” or similar

wrap the shirts or hats up with a note——“wear with pride. You earned it”

I think because my son grew up with a Marine for a Dad, he soaked up my dry sense of humor over time.
He made a tear-off countdown calendar.

170 days to I-Day
169 days to I-Day
168 days to I-Day...

His Mom was not a fan.

Not a sadist :D. I don’t think that I could have pulled off that machination. I’d want to share the appointment news just as @Alldogsgo did last night. News like that just can’t be held back. What better way to share the joy with the ones you love. I know his parents are happy for him. Super news on a Super Bowl weekend.

Congratulations.

Almost 4 years ago, as I was drinking my coffee and waiting to drive my youngest to school on my way to work, my DS came charging down the stairs wearing only a towel and a big grin. He didn’t even get halfway down the stairs and blurted, “I got an appointment!”. It was late February and plan B was becoming plan A.

Still gives me goosebumps.
