Hello all,

I've searched as many sources as possible and haven't been able to find if we're allowed to use teachers/coaches from our freshman or sophomore year to write us LORs. I've been under the impression that only coaches/teachers from your junior/senior year can write LORs, but USNA hasn't seemed to advertise that on the application so I'm second-guessing it.

For example, I did my freshman year at a different school and had a great relationship with my lacrosse coach. I know he could write me a great letter. This goes the same with my 10th-grade chemistry teacher.

Let me know your thoughts and please help clarify. Thanks so much.

You’re given clear instructions in the application regarding whom your teacher assessment should come from. It’s not a letter of recommendation, but a detailed questionnaire about your abilities and potential. If things haven’t changed, you’ll need to get these assessments from math and English teachers from junior/senior year. Read the directions carefully and pay attention to detail. It’s all there.

Once you have provided the email information for specific teachers of specific courses as specified by USNA, they are contacted directly by USNA and are asked to fill out an evaluation.

If you are providing the teacher’s school email to USNA, be sure that email is one they regularly check over the summer. Recommend you ask for their personal email, should you need to contact thrm over the summer.
