M.O.C Called

Just curious how this works. I assume the SA is waiting to see if a competitive student receives a Nom. When the SA is notified by the MOC that student A is on the slate - is the MOC then given the option to notify them? (Some do and some don't) I'm assuming then the student doesn't even know they have a Nom yet? So the call from the MOC is telling them they have a Nom AND an appointment? That must be an exciting call! How fun to be working in the MOC's office and get to make that phone call.

Congratulations!!! What district? If you don't mind sharing.
Thank you so much! I am in the 13th Congressional District in IL. I found out that my congressman does Principal Nominations with numbered alternates, but they do not publicize it. I can say; however, I had received a nomination from him three weeks ago. It was not stated as a Principal Nomination, so I am not sure if I had gotten one or not. All I cared about is that I had been given a nomination. Then, last night I was contacted by my MOC by phone to inform me of my forthcoming direct appointment. Best of luck! I am beyond excited!!! Didn't get a whole lot of sleep last night.

That's awesome! Congrats!

That's Awesome. We're in district IL-12. Hoping DS will receive some good news soon too.

Congratulations!! That is so great!

I was also wondering if anyone could help answer a question regarding nominations: if you get a nomination are you basically guaranteed an appointment? I have heard similar stories and it seems like once someone is notified that they have a nomination from their Congress person, it is a done deal. Is this true? Is it the same for is SAs? Thank you!

Most assuredly not a guarantee.

There are always more fully qualified applicants with nominations than there is room in the class. Many hundreds will be told “not this year.”

A nomination is something you need at least one of for four of the 5 Federal Academies.

Don’t mix up calls about appointments with calls about nominations. And, calls by elected officials are completely their choice, not a mandatory part of the process.

Go re-read the Sticky post at the top of the Nominations forum. Be sure you understand how principal nominations work, which essentially requires the SA to give that applicant an appointment, if they are fully qualified.

Congratulations! I can imagine it was hard to sleep last night. :)

DS has a nomination from IL district 14 to USAFA. We are unsure of whether or not they do principal nominations. I’m proud of him for getting this far. We are hopeful that he will get an appointment but his plan B options are shaping out quite nicely as well. His heart is set on USAFA after our visit there last year.

I have a nomination in my portal but have received a call or email about being nominated. I was wondering how I would know what kinda of nomination it is?
I was in the same boat for a while. I had a Senate nom in my portal but didn't get an email for about three weeks later. In regards to what kind of nom, just email the office. They're not going to be upset at you for asking questions.

I did email the MOC office, that’s how I found out he gives a principal nom with numbered alternates. But they said they do not disclose the rankings. However I am assuming I must of gotten the principal nomination since I received my nomination 3 weeks ago right before Christmas break. Also since I received the phone call from my MOC this week with the news of my forthcoming appointment offer to the U.S. Air Force Academy. As I said before, it doesn’t really matter at this point I was just curious. My offer is supposed to appear on my portal on the 19th according to my MOC! As stated before I am super excited, emotions have been running high in our house !

That's awesome. Congratulations. I'm currently working on my DoDMERB, it's been a very long process for my status. I'm hoping to hear back about an appointment by the end of next month.

I don’t know if I’m supposed to put this on the USAFA appointment thread because it’s not on my portal yet, but I received a call from my M.O.C tonight here in Illinois that I will be receiving a direct appointment! I’m beyond excited and did not expect to hear anything this soon.
Congrats! A had a few questions, 1. When did you completely submit your application? 2. Did you already get your DODMERB cleared? Thanks

Sure! I completely had my application finished not too long ago, probably around November. Everything was completed except for SAT and ACT scores, of which I took about 8 tests in total. My DoDMERB exam cleared rather quickly. When I was notified of my nomination, I already had my medical exam done. So, yes I did have everything completed when I was issued an appointment. Hope that helps!

8 tests in total? Wow! In a year where most people were lucky to get one sitting, that's remarkable. Good for you.

Well, I definitely needed them. My highest SAT score was 1290, and that was my final score that was achieved on my final SAT exam. Score wasn't the highest, but at least competitive. My first SAT score was about 1260. Thank you as well!

You're definitely lucky, I was only able to take one SAT in November of 2019. Planned to retest in the summer and throughout my senior year, but then the pandemic hit. Being in SoCal, everything is still closed and they won't let us take any tests anywhere here. Luckily my first score was competitive. I've tried several times to test with no avail.
