I don’t know if I’m supposed to put this on the USAFA appointment thread because it’s not on my portal yet, but I received a call from my M.O.C tonight here in Illinois that I will be receiving a direct appointment! I’m beyond excited and did not expect to hear anything this soon.

Congrats! Often (usually) the SA’s give the MOC’s about a week to notify their candidate, before posting the appointment to the portal. Some MOC’s do, others don’t. We have had both happen, with the same MOC.

This is a good reminder to readers to answer your unknown calls, if you are available. And to make sure you have a professional voicemail set up.

Congrats!

Just curious how this works. I assume the SA is waiting to see if a competitive student receives a Nom. When the SA is notified by the MOC that student A is on the slate - is the MOC then given the option to notify them? (Some do and some don't) I'm assuming then the student doesn't even know they have a Nom yet? So the call from the MOC is telling them they have a Nom AND an appointment? That must be an exciting call! How fun to be working in the MOC's office and get to make that phone call.

I have a nomination in my portal but have received a call or email about being nominated. I was wondering how I would know what kinda of nomination it is?

Go to the NOMINATION forum here, and read the threads at the top about nominations. If you are curious about this piece. The Nomination piece of a SA is the same, no matter what SA you are talking about.

In a nutshell, the MOC provides their list (slate) of candidates they would like the SA to offer and charge their spot to. This process is completely separate from the admissions process of XX SA. The nomination is a requirement of being offered an appointment, the other pieces are being medically qualified, and academically qualified.

IF a candidate on a slate is deemed qualified by the SA, then the admissions process can begin (BTW...there is a whole lot of other stuff that happens here. As not every person on a slate, that is deemed qualified, is offered an appointment) of selecting who the SA wants to assign appointments to the MOC's 'spot'. And there are a few different ways that MOC's can provide their slate...principal or ranked competitive for example (refer to the tabs at the top of the nomination forum for more information...or scan the nomination section for current active discussion about nominations). This is very much a generalization, and also not publicly published.

The piece that OP was posting about, is when admissions has decided that they are the one to be appointed (assigned) for that MOC's spot at USAFA. Generally, usually, the SA notifies the MOC that 'candidate XX' has been offered an appointment from your slate. Usually, generally, the SA waits about a week to let the MOC notify that candidate in person, of the offer of an appointment, if they wish. Again, some MOC's do this, and some don't. After a certain period of time, the appointment is offered directly to the candidate from the SA. Usually via an email, to check your portal for updated info. And also via the portal. It seems to be hit or miss whether the offer is sent vias snail mail as well. Neither of my boys received the offer that way.

THEN, eventually, the "BFE" arrives. Usually quite a bit later. This is the folder, envelope, signed congrats letter that you probably have seen people posting their photo with.

If CAN happen, that a candidate is never notified from the MOC that they have received that MOC's nom. And then the MOC may not notify of the appointment offer...and BOOM the candidate receives an appointment offer. All due to timing. Not the norm, but it could happen.

Thank you! Yes, I've read the Nomination forum, but was curious about the sequence of nomination/notification, etc (not sure if I missed that.) Your second to last paragraph answer my question - thanks again.

DS received a call from his MOC asking him if he still wanted to go to WP. DS answered enthusiastically yes! MOC said that he would get him there, and telling him he received a NOM. It wasn’t clear at that time, but he actually received a Principal NOM.
He later received a letter that indicated it was Principal.
Then in February he was called into HS Principals office (along with mom and dad) and received a call from MOC telling him he received his Appointment.
It’s a long roller coaster ride. Enjoy each milestone along the way and keep all alternative options in play.

That's really cool. What a great way to celebrate his appointment.

My son new he had a nomination, but not an appointment until the MOC called late on a Sunday night. His portal was updated about a week later.

Another element, is things are a little wonky this year. MOC’s/staffers have a lot on their plates presently. Lots vying for their time. They may or may not be doing things ‘per usual’ at the moment.

It is the best call! A year ago tomorrow our son was called into the high school office with his student council classmates. He thought they were getting a call from their recently retired teacher. I was asked to attend along with teachers, secretaries, principal and an at risk student our DS tutored. It was on speaker, the staffer walked everyone through the application process and competitiveness. Then she asked our son if he still wanted to attend USNA, he had to sit down (he told us later he really didn't catch what the call was about, thought it was a call saying he had a nomination). He stammered a ''yes, ma'am". She then congratulated him. There wasn't a dry eye in the room. It was awesome. Ironically, it was not from the Senator he had received principle nom from. Weird how things work out! The staffer was so nice and happy for him and had called earlier to set it all up with the school. Great memory for sure.

Agree. Impossible to predict how any particular nom/appointment might unfold, definitely not my goal - I just find the process interesting. And I love hearing the stories of candidates finding out the good news :)

Our younger DS received a nomination from our congresswoman. It was not the principal Nomination. We know that our congresswoman only has one slot available at USAFA. Knowing that someone else has been given her principal Nomination and that our congresswoman's spot is taken, how does my son move through the application process at this point. He has completed everything and his 3Q'd. We have not heard back from our senators as of yet, but wondering how kids compete for an appointment when they go to the national pool? What are the chances of receiving an appointment then?

Go to the Sticky post at the top of the Nominations forum and re-read it.

Keep in mind:
- Whover receives the principal nom must also be found fully qualified.
- Other fully qualified candidates on the slate may be offered a nom by the SA, because they have some noms they control which can be charged to another nom authority, which you noted.
- Presumably your son applied for the VP nom, so that is a chance.
- Keep fingers crossed for the Senators.

There is no way to predict chances once he competes nationally. That is why the advice is the standing “tend alternate plans,” and if the SA is still the dream path, re-apply. There are always multi-time applicants in every class.

There are simply more qualified applicants with noms than there is room in the class. If he is not given an offer of appointment, he ups his grit game and shows continuing growth and perseverance.

It’s still relatively early days yet in the cycle.
