March 8th, 2011 AROTC Board

Hey guys I just have a quick question about transfers. Does it mean that if I receive a scholarship for my 2nd school but not my 1st I can submit a transfer request ad it will switch to my 1st choice? If that's true it will be a weight off my shoulders since Ive already decided I am only going to my 1st choice with or without a scholarship.

Good points

Love how you all are so optomistic, but this is the same CC that told people all kinds of stuff prior to the January boards results too.(half laughing/half crying at this point:thumb:) I hope they know more and are being more upfront this time, but I'll stick with the 7th....if I'm wrong and its earlier, I'll own it.

Paradoxer, how long will be at DS school for his visit? Make sure he gets to see everything(been a way too many school visits w/ DD & DS)sometimes what they think is important for tours isn't what he'll need to see -- push the issue with Admissions and they will get him in and if you need to see other people(profs, advisors, make sure who sets up those appointments) Everyone has always been great about helping us get what we needed from the visits, sometimes we just had to ask.

This will be visit number two so we are approaching it a bit differently since DS already talked with department head, ROO and hockey coach last year at this time. This year is a bit more nitty gritty where DS will be asking the "where do you see me fitting?" questions, including the possibility of a campus based scholarship. It's a 12 hour drive so DS will be on campus from Wednesday night through Sunday morning with the hopes of rooming with someone in the ROTC program. Skating/hockey is also involved which is always fun.

Agree that the tours are often emphasized but buildings don't talk too much so we actually haven't (and won't) do an official tour. Interestingly some friends have advised looking at 1) are the students smiling/happy, 2) how clean are the bathrooms, 3) how helpful are offices that are not expecting you and 4) checking out the surrounding town (are they selling drugs on the street corners?). These sorts of things ring true to me but I think at the end of the day it's usually about connecting: something in your inner soul connects with the vision of those you are around, whether it's an intellectual atmosphere, campus spaces, ideology or an uttered phrase that sticks with you. The mystery of college admissions is that two parties have come to the same dance with neither knowing what song the other prefers.

You can request a transfer but it doesn't mean you'll get one.

It'll help if your first choice is less money and you need to already be accepted.

Sg1fan93 is right. The things you will need is an acceptance letter from the school you want to tranfer to, permission from the PMS that they have an available slot. The school you want to transfer to should cost less then the school you are originally offered.

Wow, not one post for a whole day on this thread?? We are all just so tired of waiting that its difficult for me to even log in. Saw some other interesting threads about particular schools and their programs(all ROTC) Read that Pantentesq DS had an overnight at USMA(hope it was amazing and helps him with his complex decision of which opportunity is best). Also saw a new high school junior asking for help "when to apply" the cycle starts again for 2012, hard to believe this will soon be over, at least this part. Hope everyone has had a good weekend, saw some sunshine and survied one less hour of sleep(I HATE daylight savings time).

Take care.

So ?

Are we just waiting for second board responses so CC can determine if there are 1000 or 975 or 962 spots (for example) based on "yes" responses received by 3/31? Or is there something else that needs to transpire before the last batch can be notified? In years with more boards and greater overlap was the notification time frame always about 21-28 days? Apologize if this was addressed and I've forgotten but couldn't remember how it used to be in previous years.

I think given the non-binding nature of the AROTC offer, most if not all will accept the offer so there won't be too many "no" responses by 3/31.

I think the important day will be Tuesday, when Congress is set to vote on the 3-week extension of the CR. There are rumblings that the freshmen GOP House members will vote to oppose. But it appears that this will pass. If it passes, which I personally believe it will notwithstanding the drama that may occur this week, then I think the Army will release the remaining offers. If this means the Army has to purchase one less Apache helicopter to honor the commitments it has made, it will do so.

In short, if there is a 3-week extension, there will be no delay and we should all hear by April 1. That gives everyone a month to sort out their decisions. I also think that when students who have elected USMA over the scholarship to School A, that frees up School A to offer a campus-based scholarship, so that money will be accounted for by September.

I like how people are pointing out how little percentage scholarships are out of the whole Army budget. The Army is truly HUGE! And as Patentesq said, one less Apache= 2 dozen+ scholarships. Everyone should keep this in mind when contemplating the Army's budget. As has been said before, the Army does, and always will need officers. Until world peace comes about

When I made predictions about the January board(yeah, remember that:rolleyes:) It was based on reading LAST years boards(fall & Jan.09-10) and the 3 weeks spacing was almost like clock work, as seen also in Oct 10 board. So, the overlap isn't anything new to them...but as with all things related to CC, I'm taking a grain of salt:wink:

I agree with Patentesq to a degree with the outcome of the Govn't CR on Tuesday being critical to not only the "budget" but also the manpower to be able to post the results too.

Oh, and read an article today that ties in to sg1fan93's comments about the size of the Army. http://www.armytimes.com/news/2011/03/army-casey-expects-dangerous-decade-ahead-031311w/

Good night all.

@Ohioparent... just for fun - I'll take March 31st. Won't put $$ on it, need all we can for college - but surely it is worth putting a margarita on the line

Cute

I think if it's March 31st everyone would be glad to buy you one because it would be about as early as it gets. Read a thread from way back, 2008, by accident, and it looked like the board results were released just days after the board met instead of weeks.

Agreed. Maragritas it is...good bet.:thumb:
So we have 4/1, 4/7, 3/31 and 4/15 taken.

Paradoxer, don't you hate realizing how much simpler this process has been, our DS's really didn't get a great year to start this up. Yeah, like we've talked, can't pick your birthday, but wow, wish this stuff was still decided at the campus level, my DS would be in much better shape. We are going back for like a 5th visit 4/1(won't be around to check status from 7am to 7pm). His school isn't 12 hours way, only 3, so its not so crazy to run out there so much. Its over spring break for us too. Championships for DD winterguard the next day(these girls are really good and should place high in standings:smile:) Anyhow, on to laundry.

Try to teach my kids that life is full of changes, or as I read this weekend, "lumpy." I'm going to remember that one. Constantly iterating the "life isn't fair" mantra. Unrealistic expectations have been the downfall of many. Also found this an interesting read http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/08/opinion/08brooks.html?_r=1&ref=davidbrooks
Love the term equipoise, new to me, but think those of us still waiting need a few scoops.

My money is on the 29th.

Paradoxer, thanks for posting the link and the "lumpy" description of life is very accurate. Will file that one myself. There are not enough scoops of equiposise to get me thru, but hey, I bookmarked the article to share with my 2 oldest. Personally, the things that are easily counted aren't typically the things that count. Its a paraphrase on Einstein, I believe, that a group I belonged to years back used to push against the highstakes testing movement brought on with No Child Left Untested legislation. My kiddos still love to tell the story of mom being pictured in the local newspaper as a protester when Pres. Bush signed it at a nearby high school. Anyway, getting too OT.

Oh, and FloridaDad, 3/29 is noted for the "books".

Don't mean to go off topic..but I'm sure someone here can verify/deny this. If DS doesn't receive a scholarship and walks on. SMC. When will he need a DOD physical? I assume it won't be until he contracts, but I'm not sure. I know he will need an ADHD waiver. Kept him on Rx 6 months too long per the new standards..(standards changed this last spring and didn't see that one coming. Don't know if he needs to take any medical records with him or not when he matriculates. Also I was told that those the receive in school scholarships don't have the HS "escape clause". If he gets a 3 year offer its irrelevant, but on the outside chance that he gets 3.5 year offer does he still have the option to make his decision by day one of his Sophomore year or not if its a campus scholarship? Thanks
