I don't know the details of the 3 year - we will be meeting with the ROO at South Carolina next Tuesday when DS is on spring break so I am sure we will find out more then...and yes, it's an amazing opportunity. He was planning to go and join ROTC even if he did not get a scholarship, so even 3 years is a blessing. It just took a little bit of wind out of our sails. Still much to be thankful for!
First, congratulations to your son, it has been a long wait.
The 3 year AD Scholarship has all the same benefits of a 4 year, it just starts day one of their Sophomore year.
There are a few requirements that have to be met the first year:
Maintain a min. 2.0 cumulative School GPA
Maintain at least the min. required credits to be a full time student.
Maintain a 3.0 GPA in all MS Classes
Enroll in all MS classes and don't miss class
Pass the PT Test. Do this as early as possible and stay within the standards all year. This is a big one.
Be fully active in ROTC activities
Stay medically qualified. Don't worry about sprained ankles or minor injuries, only major things.
Stay out of trouble. No MIP's or MIC's, Traffic tickets above a $250.00 fine, or any other legal issues.
Get the recommendation of the PMS. If he follows all the above the recommendation should not be an issue.
Once he starts his Sophomore year he will receive the tuition, book money and stipend. He will also sign the contract at that time and the Army will now, for a lack of a better term, own him. Again starting the Sophomore year he will have all the benefits of every scholarship cadet including the opportunity for summer schools such as Airborne, Air Assult, and others.
Have a great trip to the school and again congratulations.
