March 8th, 2011 AROTC Board

Looks like everyone has been busy today. There may or may not be a pattern with the alphabet. In the long run, it really won't matter. The main fact is knowing when the offers are completed and no new status updates are forthcoming. We are blessed with 2 ROOs who are honest and trustworthy who will give us that heads up.

It has been so difficult to leave this up to fate, but ultimately our DS/DDs will get where they are supposed to be, how they are supposed to get there. Fate, faith or whatever you need to call it is in control here to a large extent. My DS is going to college regardless and somehow after seeing just this tip of the iceburg of insanity that the military life is, he still wants to be an officer. Go figure.

I hope tomorrow is peaceful for all of us and we wake Monday to some great news for many of our kids.

Take care.

I second that :beer1:

Guess the alphabet theory is blow outta the water now:tank:

Maybe, but his offer is for a 4 year - those may have posted first, then the 3 years(most offers are 3 this board). It won't matter tomorrow if its alphabetical or not. The distraction is working.

Guessing your DD/DS is waiting for OSU?

Yes DS has already been accepted and committed to OSU scholarship or not, but one sure would be nice:thumb:

Everyone just please calm down. Who cares in what order they're notifying? It really doesn't matter. You WILL BE NOTIFIED. Promise.

It's just a fun way to pass the time. No one is worked up and we do realize that we will be notified. No one here is banking on the aforementioned theory, but since many of us have been in this since last summer, trying to figure out a method/pattern to the notification process has become a game. Tomorrow or Tuesday should be the last of it. Its been a long winter.

I agree with Ohio, I don't think anyone is panicking.

Yes, of course they are stressing. I have done the process of college selection 2x, one ROTC, one not.

As most parents will state here; their kids are as cool as cucumbers, and they are the ones with knots in their stomach. They come here to talk, vent, whatever. That allows them the ability to show no fear for their children, while they sit there and say "OMG, Johnny/Janie chose a school, that unless they get the scholarship, we will have to say we can't afford it".

That is hard for a parent. Hard to say, you got your dream, but because of us and not being able to pay you can't go.

Not saying that is where everyone is at, but again as a Mom with 2 in and a 3rd applying to college next yr, it is hard to find 40K a yr (assuming both are in state) ~~~ I don't know many parents with 3500 A MONTH hanging out in their back pocket, especially since the DOW is now just hitting the same number as it was at 4 yrs ago. Add that if they have kids already in and had to hit the mutuals when the market was at 9K.

On top of that let us realize TWE's will be coming out. You have spent now 5 weeks looking up to sky for the shoe to drop. It is tiring. It is frustrating. Some have been on this path for 9 months, they just want an answer so they can move on. They can jump for joy, put up balloons, or lick their wounds, but I understand the frustration.

Who cares in what order they're notifying? It really doesn't matter. You WILL BE NOTIFIED. Promise.

You are correct the order doesn't matter. Yes, they will be notified.

However, as a parent of an AFROTC cadet, and as a wife of an AF officer who served 21 yrs., the issue isn't about order or everyone being notified, it is about how they emotionally feel, and how the organization reacts to their needs.

This is the very 1st step in the relationship, where the family gains trust with the military. That they trust them with their child, and believes that their child is the Army's family.

Bullet as an AF officer did 2 tours with the Army. Both of us walked away with great Army friends. We also walked away with the fact that they hold the exact same common bond as the AF. They are family. They elected to join that family, they were not born into it, however, that color of uniform runs in the blood.

That is where I do agree, once in, you will be in awe. You will realize that although they share no DNA at all, they believe they do...it is called the "brethren".

What I am trying to say is:

These posters don't need to be hit with a wet noodle. They know the facts. They need kindness and consideration.

I am also saying to the posters, don't start thinking negative about the military because of this delay. You will see in the future it was worth wait.

Honestly, I love my family, and miss them always, but there was never a yr that we were alone for the holidays. There was never a time that I couldn't call someone up to babysit my kids when I had to take one to the doc. Even when our DD was bitten by a copperhead snake (3 times) and rushed by ambulance to the hospital, the military leadership was there before the ambulance arrived.

It is worth it.

Good luck.

School Choices

I received a phone called about a hour ago from a ROO at one of my DS's choice schools. Yes, on a Sunday afternoon. I am so glad he called. Now I have all of the information to surprise DS with tomorrow when I pick him up from the cruise ship. ROO also said DS should receive the official letter by Wednesday. He has received offers from his top 3 schools.

4 year Auburn
4 year North Georgia
3 year The Citadel

DS has a big decision to make. This week is his spring break so I think DS, DH and myself will be making one more visit to the schools.

I find it interesting that The Citadel is 3 year. I take it to be because of the tuition cost being higher? or didn't he explain that?

I would think that is the reason for the 3 year at The Citadel as well. The ROO was not from The Citadel and did not know the reason for sure. The Citadel is out of state for us and that raises the cost greatly. I guess we will find out for sure when we speak with them later this week.

I was really surprised but happy with the two 4 year scholarships. I thought most from this round would probably be 3 year. At least that gives us hope that there are still some more 4 year scholarships out there.

My finger and toes are still crossed for everyone and I prayed really hard in church this morning.

That is what I was thinking as well not to mention the fact that you received multiple offers:thumb: I was under the impression that multiple offers in this late stage might not be prevalent. That has to be the topper:thumb: Thanks for the prayers:thumb:

So here's what's been going thru my mind. Sorry in advance to add more stress to anyone, but inquiring minds want to know.

If a scholarship is offered what happens if:

1. It is to a school you weren't accepted to.

2. It is to a school you don't wish to attend.

3. It is to a school you have already declined.

In all these situations I assume you will start the transfer request. But how does it effect your transfer request (if at all) if it's a school you have already declined or one you decide to decline after you receive a scholarship?

My DS has an in-state school that has a good sized program but after multiple visits he really does not fit and doesn't want to attend (the school not the ROTC program, which he did like). He has already declined one OOS school. Do any of these actions effect the way your transfer request is treated?

We understand that ultimately we will have to pay for school, etc if the scholarship doesn't work out, but he wants to do ROTC and we would hate to lose the scholarship due to above reasons. Likewise we don't want to send him to school where he doesn't fit. We just want to know how transfers are looked at in these situations, or if all transfers are treated the same way.

Very Impressive

You must be accepted to the school you are trying to transfer it to. I think the only other factors that effect your chances are if the school you are trying to transfer to is more/less expensive then the one you got the scholarship to and if there are still spots open for the school

Here is a link from Clarkson http://goldenknightbattalion.wordpress.com/2011/03/21/how-to-transfer-a-scholarship/ hope it helps..He is the AROTC Guru in these parts.

Bamamom.. Quick question. Was this your DS's only board? Wondering if he was shut out on first two boards and then hit the jackpot...Would love to know the details... Congrats again!

Thanks for the Congrats. I was really glad to hear about the multiple offers also. I thought there would be just one like most from the January board.

This was not his first board. I know he was board ready for the January board but I am not sure if he was for the October board. He sent everything in and should have been board ready for the October board but we were notified that a piece was missing and he had to resend it. It has been a long wait but at least it ended with good news.
