As always, DS is a bit vague when answering questions. He texted the other day asking about his ACT/ SAT scores, and advised the USMC needed copies of his scores for his package he needs to submit before graduation (USNA). He thinks they may use it for some sort of sorting/ screening for TBS. He already has been selected for aviation and does not think it will necessarily be used in his case. Anyone know what the scores are actually used for, and why they just don't get the info from the USNA?

Well, they certainly aren't going to every NROTC college in the nation to get the SAT/ACT scores for ROTC or PLC midshipmen, so why do it for USNA? The officer candidate is responsible for pulling together their own package, which they'll do again and again in the process of getting promoted. Might as well start now. Of course I don't know this, just my surmise/opinion. This is a large bureaucracy and this is the process. I gave up fighting large bureaucracies years ago.

Not at all sure what it's used for at TBS.

Point taken. I was not thinking about the hundreds of other schools. I do still wonder what their interest in high school standardized tests are? Seems like they would take the "what have you done for me lately" stand.

This commissioning packet will be the start of his official USMC personnel file. It will eventually include his USNA gpa and other details.

Not the case in the Navy. I never once had to pull together a package to get promoted. It is good to check your record when you're getting close to a
promotion milestone but I never had to add/send in anything. As you get to be pretty senior, you might have the need to send in a letter to the
promotion board but that too is not a requirement by any means.

For the USMC it’s moslty checking that your record is all updated with current information and Fit Reps are all in. Other than that it’s taking an updated photo.

Not sure why they are asking for it. I would be surprised if it’s used for anything more than reference. For what... I not sure, maybe some advanced schooling to gauge their testing ability???
