So I was wondering,
I'm outstanding at shooting, but I'm also a very fast runner. Should I go with JV Track or Marksmanship? I feel like Marksmanship would be more enjoyable sense its connected to my NJROTC Unit, but a lot of people are telling me to do an Athletic. Marksmanship isn't an athletic? I need some help here.

Why not both?

Marksmanship won't help your application for the athletic portion but it would look good more as an "extracirricularish" activity. I would try doing both if possible.

@Breedlove.NJROTC - you have been advised that around 80-90% (closer to 90% than 80%) of successful SA applicants have participated in Varsity athletics. People have advised you that it is important to have athletics, but not required. You are a"very fast runner" why not do track and work towards earning a Varsity Letter in a Team Sport. You are "outstanding" at shooting so do that as well. Best of both worlds.

You need to focus on things that improve your chances - Varsity Athletics improve your chances (90 vs 10)

Oh, of course!

Me again.

I’m assuming by “marksmanship,” you mean rifle: the NCAA-recognized, Div I athletic at Army.

Those who say rifle isn’t a sport are wrong; it’s been Olympics since the first modern competition. On top of that, the Army Marksmanship Unit was created by Eisenhower to bring competitive shooters and their skills into the folds of the main Army. The Army loves its shooters.

As for your decision: it would honestly depend on which sport you love more. Don’t do one or the other because it may make you more competitive; choose your sport based on which you love more. I would say to go rifle (if we’re talking about competitive small bore & air rifle) since the Army rifle team is very squared away and you have already competed in it. If you make JO’s, you’ll be very recruitable.

Don’t panick so soon by the way. You have a long way to go (you’re not even a sophomore). All you have to do is pick something by the start of junior year and stick to it. If my experience of getting in is anything, you’ll be fine.

With rifle, you’ll have to do exercise outside of you practicing time, but think of that as a way to set yourself apart from the rest of the kids who want to get on the rifle team. If anything, FOCUS ON YOUR PULL-UPS. I maxed at 18 by the way, which was what carried my CFA score.

Yeah, I'd just rather be prepared! It makes me more confident.

Marksmanship is an athletic. There'll be a box you can check for it when you're listing your athletics. Don't know about Naval but I know West Point has a Division 1 rifle team, and I'm pretty sure all the academies have clubs for practicing marksmanship. I've heard that it's good to go in with no rifle experience because they'll reteach you everything you need to know at CBT but if you want to shoot then shoot, it's an awesome sport. I wish I did track more since I'll have a lot of running once I get to CBT.

Thanks! I'm starting the Rifle Team next year!

West Point, USNA, USAFA, and Coast Guard Academy all have NCAA teams. You can also compete in Varsity track unless you qualify for Natl Junior Olympics or other National matches that take place in summer, then your rifle training will continue through spring. Another option if you really want to get a Varsity sport under your belt is Cross Country. The season will run into the start of rifle season, but isn’t as detrimental to your training at that time of year.

my son did Rifle. It's a skill that shows dedication and is considered a sport. Are they different seasons you can do both?

Thank you!

My son was on rifle team all 4 years of high school (JROTC sporter class) and earned 3 varsity letters and served as team captain 2 years. He did end up joining track for 2 seasons, but really just to help with physical conditioning. He did not letter in track. He wound up on the D1 rifle team, and they have other shooting club sports teams at West Point too. Try to do both if possible, but if you have to choose only one and want to shoot rifle, do it. Whatever you do, seek out leader roles.

I played soccer, raider, air rifle, track, cross country, and more all at once. I think you can work with the coaches and be able to do both. One thing you could do is go to Air Rifle... and run on your own time for practice and compete in the meets.
