Math Teacher Evaluation

I am a rising senior applying to USNA. I didn't have a math class my junior year, but I was told I had to get an evaluation from a junior year math teacher. Could I have a sophomore year math teacher evaluate me, or substitute a science teacher?

Ask your admissions counselor. You’re in an anomalous situation for which there are no publicly available guidelines.

Follow instructions specifically. My son didn’t have a junior year English teacher....instructions said ‘junior or senior year instructor’. He emailed admissions asking if he could use sophomore year as he didn’t have a junior year instructor.

Boy, did he feel foolish when the response was (paraphrased) ‘sir, then you will use your senior year teacher. As stated in the instructions’.

He learned a lesson that day. To follow instructions.

I will not have a senior year math teacher either, unfortunately

That may be a hard sell to USNA...something to think about...no math for 2 years.

My guy added that aforementioned English class 1st semester to his schedule, in order to have it specifically to fulfill that evaluation requirement.

Turns out is worked out well for him. He took a class about writing professional type correspondences. He is a Mid now. Might be something to consider!

Don’t know the reason why you would go two years without math (and you don’t need to share why on this forum, as it’s none of our business). But if that’s the case, you may have a bigger problem than not having a junior-year math teacher to do an assessment.

Suggest you take up this issue with Admissions and/or B&G officer. It’s highly unusual and if it’s not out of your hands, I believe it would be looked upon unfavorably. USNA — all SAs — is a STEM-centric institution. They seek people who’ve shown themselves capable of higher math. So you’ll need a very good reason for not having math for two years.

What is the last math you have taken?
Why are you not taking any math for two years?

Ah, should have mentioned it's because I ran out of math classes to take in my district my sophomore year, nothing was offered above calculus 2. I took the next level class online this year, but I have no real relationship with the supervisor and it was mostly self-work (I also received no credit for the class on my official transcript). I emailed my BGO about it and I'll contact admissions if he can't answer either.

I am im the exact same boat, ran out of math classes. My USAFA counselor told me I could substitute junior/senior teacher with my sophomore Calc 2 teacher. Not the same school but Im sure they can make changes for you

That's what I'm hoping for, I have a good relationship with my sophomore year BC calc teacher so I'd prefer she do the evaluation.

Does your local Community College have any classes you could take as Dual Enrollment?
Have you talked to your Guidance Counselor about options?
Have you taken AP Stats?
