So my dd did not get her medical waiver from DoDMERB, she has an SLIGHT allergy to tree nuts (no epi-pen has ever been prescribed) and had eczema up to about a year and a half ago. In the letter it says:

"While I know this news is disappointing, the process “may” not be over for you. Medical waiver processing is possible. You will not be denied entry to any of the programs listed below, solely because of a DoDMERB medical disqualification. Any additional medical information you submit now will be forwarded for the waiver authority’s review. The waiver process, by program, are below:

Service Academy: If the Admissions Office determines you to be “competitive” for an offer of appointment, they will automatically initiate your medical waiver process."

I guess my question, is there really hope?

You are still O.K. Anyone with any medical history gets DQ'd by DoDMERB. If your SA deems your DD is competitive for a spot they will initiate a waiver review. The review board will contact your DD through DoDMERB should any additional medical information/tests/exams be required.

Thank you so much

DoDMERB determines Q or DQ.
SAs determine:

1. If the applicant is competitive enough for an offer of appointment.
2. If YES, they will consider the applicant for a medical waiver.
3. If NO, they won’t and medical will NOT be the reason for not receiving an appointment to an SA.

Both my USMMA kids, DS class of '13 and DD class of '21, were DQ'd by DoDMERB. Waivers were requested and we sent additional information and had additional medical testing done. DS was even determined to be medically qualified for naval aviation (in spite of the initial DQ issue) and is now a Navy pilot. Lots of eventual appointees have initial DQ's, so don't worry. If your candidate is otherwise well-qualified, expect a waiver request. What you can do is address the request(s) made in the waiver analysis as soon as possible.

When you say any medical history does this mean having answered yes to ANY of the medical history questions?

Ex: "57. Variocele, hydrocele, or any scrotal mass, swelling or pain" I answered yes to this as I once had a varicocele in my left testicle that was fixed with varicocele ligation....

However the form DoDI 6130.03, March 30, 2018 https://www.med.navy.mil/sites/nmotc/nami/arwg/Documents/WaiverGuide/DODI_6130.03_JUL12.pdf

Under disqualifying conditions it indicates that the Varicocele is only disqualifying if current and only when on the right side....

e. Current varicocele, unless it is: (1) On the left side only. (2) Asymptomatic and smaller than the testes. (3) Reducible. (4) Without associated testicular atrophy.

Can someone put my mind at ease while I wait? or not?😭

“Anyone with a medical history gets DQd by DoDMERB,” is not a totally accurate statement.

Now highlighted by the interpretation USEYTsailor for an entirely different condition.

USEYTsailor = comply with the FAST sticky under the DoDMERB tab😁

It does however feel like any item marked YES on the DODMERB self eval is an instant DQ and then you can submit additional info to be considered for a waiver. I was DQ'd for a history of nasal allergies and was told I needed to get off of prescription meds and use over the counter. I got the waiver. During in processing at USAFA I was asked "We see you have a history of allergies, would you like a prescription for that????????"

Like Mr. Mullen stated - DODMERB determines if you meet the regulation and that is a binary determination - Do or Do not (there is no try). The school then decides if they are ok with the condition and your status. Medical DQ is far more common than I would have imagined, but it is just one more part of the grind / process.

I have another question regarding the medical waiver. My DS was accepted to USNA and he has already accepted his appointment. He had some back pain from football season, he had been going to a chiropractor, but we decided to get an MRI done a few weeks ago. MRI showed a mild disc protrusion. We submitted the dr report and now he is under waiver review. It says to submit any further doctor determinations for consideration. He has a follow up on March 31, do we need to get him in sooner? What is the waiver window time frame? He hasn't had any pain for quite some time now. Pain stopped before we did the MRI - but we thought we should get it done anyway. He has been doing PT and all is good now, he is back to all activities.

Does anyone know from past experience if the SA will inform the candidate if they decide to pursue a waiver or not? My DD is in similar situation, and when she called USMMA few weeks ago they stated is was up to the Director of Admission to deicide if they wish to pursue a waiver or not. She has not received any requests for additional medical information, so we don't know if that is bad news or not.

My DD (class of '21) got an email from Admissions informing her of the request for waiver. I'm not sure if that is standard practice for this year. Good luck!

DD got an email that directed her to a status change on DoDMERB as well as a letter on her USAFA portal. I'm sure it is dependent on what the candidate is DQ'd for and if a remedial is needed or not. IOW, it's not over until it is. Good luck to your DD!

Thank you all for the encouraging words and a little more insight into this process :)
