Hi,
Is it pretty common to be interviewed before a MID gets security clearance? DS just called and is scheduled for an interview tomorrow by a special agent.
DS is a plebe and have overseas contacts with relatives.

Thanks

Yes. Routine for AD. Not sure if it’s common for plebes, but it may be SOP for those with certain aspects of their applications.

More information can be found at: https://www.dcsa.mil/mc/pv/mbi/.

They can and will contact both the points of contact listed directly in the SF-86 and any other auxiliary contacts that may come up during the investigation. Perfectly normal. Gym teachers, high school teachers, middle school teachers, professors, coaches, neighbors, friends, coworkers, cousins, etc.

Investigators can be verified via phone or email if there is a privacy/security concern: https://www.dcsa.mil/mc/pv/mbi/vi/.

Passport is normal. Used to verify foreign travel (and identify whether there has been unreported foreign travel).

Might be worth noting that some departments may already be putting together summer training after next semester.

He may be getting more than the standard MIDN security clearance in preparation for an opportunity this summer.

I have been interviewed several times for friends who maintain clearances. Feels invasive and the party doing the interview seems robotic but just answer honestly and you are good.

The party doing the interview are contract investigators for OPM. It’s a high turn over role. I actually asked my last investigator if they were new because they were so lost. They said I was their first interview. They become very routine and part of your life.

Interviewing friends, family and neighbors is perfectly normal. Validating nothing out of the norm for someone. Foreign contacts, family, friends and travel is always of interest. Also so is financials. Bankruptcy, debt, etc. are always heavily looked at it.

At least they called! For my ANG member, there was no call. Just a knock and a ‘hello we are here’ to his neighbors.
I’ll add this piece…remembered last night. DS had NOT included this neighbor on his form bc he is from Russia, speaks with a super thick, hard to understand, accent. He used other neighbors. NBD.

But guess what? They knocked on the Russian neighbors door anyhow. And others. They talk to who they want to talk to 😎😎😎

The serious investigations don't happen Plebe Year for most as Plebes are being put in for Secret Clearances. Some Upperclass start to get put in for higher clearances which involve more detailed investigations and after graduation, many Naval officers will end up going through the process. FWIW, the basic Secret Clearance for Plebes will often not have interviews involved at all.

I was shocked to receive a call to be interviewed for my doolie this year for her clearance. In 21 years of service, I never got called for my spouse, not even after we first married.

I suspect this is true, given manpower issues. During Plebe year, my DS's former employer was interviewed.

DS spent Junior year of HS overseas, Gap Year overseas, DW's family is in NATO countries, GF is not a US citizen. Over the years he has done a ton of non-Military travel. He wishes he had made a list of all travel and foreign contacts as they occurred, since he has moved up the security clearance food chain.

The forms will be very detailed and it will simply make DS's life easier when the time comes to fill them out. The process mentioned by @OldRetSWO is designed to suss out inconsistencies and memory lapses. It's nothing to worry about, but the investigators will insist on "completeness" on the forms.

Best of luck to your DS!

Also I would highly recommend keeping a complete duplicate copy of the application. You will have to complete them as your career progresses and you won’t have discrepancies if you have your initial app. It’s hard to remember all of the details required.

DS called, was asked questions about overseas travel. He has travelled overseas kind of every year, i guess that was the reason. He was told that some of his contacts will be called soon as part of the process.

Thanks everyone for the input.

DoD TS clearance review process:

"Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the caldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
Adder's fork, and blind-worm's sting,
Lizard's leg, and owlet's wing,—
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.
ALL. Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and caldron bubble."

If it made perfect sense and were predictable from case to case;.....................it would be useless. We can ***** about it (and I have) but "The 3 Witches" are gonna do what they do.

Ah Shakespeare who knew Macbeth would sneak in . Security clearance is not the three witches check is normal whatever your grade.

Best line:

Macduff scene 5

"Despair thy charm,
And let the angel whom thou still hast served
Tell thee,......... Macduff was from his mother’s womb
Untimely ripped."

DD was a C section, and I do a decent Scottish brogue. "Ye were frum yer muther's wum Untimely Ripped!": I made good use of the line for about 17yrs.
