MMI Honesty (please look before deciding on a prep school)

I'm currently a cadet at MMI, and after following these forums for a while, I wanted to share a word of caution for anyone considering MMI as their top choice for a Service Academy Prep (SAP) program.

The SAP program includes four main classes: math, English, chemistry, and either U.S. history (for West Point-bound cadets) or physics (for everyone else). I didn't know this before coming here, and others might not either. While I’m enjoying my time at MMI and doing well, it’s important to note that I came in with a strong STEM foundation, which not everyone has. The chemistry class, in particular, is the hardest I’ve ever taken. Unless you've taken AP Chemistry before, you will find it incredibly challenging. (The average for the last 2 tests were high D's) Although people who go on to the academies say this course makes chemistry there a breeze, it can seriously impact your GPA(and thereby your chances of getting into the academies) here unless you're already well-prepared or willing to dedicate a lot of study time. I know several people who have already dropped the class, and others who are seriously considering it.

In math, most SAP cadets take either pre-calculus or calculus, with the majority in pre-calc. The teacher for calculus and most pre-calc sections is a very kind woman, but she has a very thick accent, which can make her difficult to understand at times. You’ll likely need to teach yourself some material, but the fail rate is low because she is a generous grader who truly wants to see her students succeed and get into the academies.

TLDR: The MMI SAP program is not an easy ride that will automatically boost your GPA. There are tough, college-level courses that will require significant time and effort for most people just to earn a B or C. Many of us, myself included, came in thinking a junior college in Alabama would be a breeze—be sure you’re ready for the challenge.

Honest assessment from what DS told me this time last year while he was at MMI. MMI's SAP Chemistry course is no joke. I've talked with several parents and possible re-apps about the difficulty of that Chemistry course. DS, who is much brighter than I am, got through it and is now pursuing his dream. I'll say this to you, as I did to him, the challenge is in the struggle. It's meant to be challenging, they're getting you prepped for a Service Academy. Head down, stay focused, stay disciplined, run to the chaos, embrace the suck, one foot in front of the other. It was this way for DS, every year, there are SAP'rs that don't make it and move on to something different, but for those that stick to the plan and grind it out...

MMI has a plan, work the plan and the plan will work for you. Stay the course Patriot05.

OH, I almost forgot, the most important thing I told him, DON'T QUIT!

I also know through my son, who was at MMI last year, that Chemistry was the toughest class he took. Grading was tough. Nevertheless, he was offered appointments at West Point and the Air Force Academy. While I don't sit in their admissions rooms, I suspect that they have a pretty good idea what they are getting from MMI and, more importantly, what grades in various courses there mean.

If you put the work in, do what they say, and stay out of trouble, I think you'll have a very good chance of earning an appointment somewhere.

I second what @franknd states above. My son graduated from MMI this past Spring and also received appointments to West Point and the Air Force Academy. Chemistry at MMI was the most difficult class he took. He is now excelling at Chemistry at West Point and is very grateful for the difficulty level of his MMI Chemistry course. The folks and professors within the Service Academy Program at MMI know exactly what they are doing and how to prepare students exceptionally well for Service Academy academics.

Our DS is at GMC this year for Falcon Foundation and just like echoed above, Chemistry is most definitely rough. He's powering through but will be glad to have this quarter done. College level chem on a quarter system is absolutely no joke.
