MMI Honesty (please look before deciding on a prep school)

I'm currently a cadet at MMI, and after following these forums for a while, I wanted to share a word of caution for anyone considering MMI as their top choice for a Service Academy Prep (SAP) program.

The SAP program includes four main classes: math, English, chemistry, and either U.S. history (for West Point-bound cadets) or physics (for everyone else). I didn't know this before coming here, and others might not either. While I’m enjoying my time at MMI and doing well, it’s important to note that I came in with a strong STEM foundation, which not everyone has. The chemistry class, in particular, is the hardest I’ve ever taken. Unless you've taken AP Chemistry before, you will find it incredibly challenging. (The average for the last 2 tests were high D's) Although people who go on to the academies say this course makes chemistry there a breeze, it can seriously impact your GPA(and thereby your chances of getting into the academies) here unless you're already well-prepared or willing to dedicate a lot of study time. I know several people who have already dropped the class, and others who are seriously considering it.

In math, most SAP cadets take either pre-calculus or calculus, with the majority in pre-calc. The teacher for calculus and most pre-calc sections is a very kind woman, but she has a very thick accent, which can make her difficult to understand at times. You’ll likely need to teach yourself some material, but the fail rate is low because she is a generous grader who truly wants to see her students succeed and get into the academies.

TLDR: The MMI SAP program is not an easy ride that will automatically boost your GPA. There are tough, college-level courses that will require significant time and effort for most people just to earn a B or C. Many of us, myself included, came in thinking a junior college in Alabama would be a breeze—be sure you’re ready for the challenge.

Honest assessment from what DS told me this time last year while he was at MMI. MMI's SAP Chemistry course is no joke. I've talked with several parents and possible re-apps about the difficulty of that Chemistry course. DS, who is much brighter than I am, got through it and is now pursuing his dream. I'll say this to you, as I did to him, the challenge is in the struggle. It's meant to be challenging, they're getting you prepped for a Service Academy. Head down, stay focused, stay disciplined, run to the chaos, embrace the suck, one foot in front of the other. It was this way for DS, every year, there are SAP'rs that don't make it and move on to something different, but for those that stick to the plan and grind it out...

MMI has a plan, work the plan and the plan will work for you. Stay the course Patriot05.

OH, I almost forgot, the most important thing I told him, DON'T QUIT!

I also know through my son, who was at MMI last year, that Chemistry was the toughest class he took. Grading was tough. Nevertheless, he was offered appointments at West Point and the Air Force Academy. While I don't sit in their admissions rooms, I suspect that they have a pretty good idea what they are getting from MMI and, more importantly, what grades in various courses there mean.

If you put the work in, do what they say, and stay out of trouble, I think you'll have a very good chance of earning an appointment somewhere.

I second what @franknd states above. My son graduated from MMI this past Spring and also received appointments to West Point and the Air Force Academy. Chemistry at MMI was the most difficult class he took. He is now excelling at Chemistry at West Point and is very grateful for the difficulty level of his MMI Chemistry course. The folks and professors within the Service Academy Program at MMI know exactly what they are doing and how to prepare students exceptionally well for Service Academy academics.

Our DS is at GMC this year for Falcon Foundation and just like echoed above, Chemistry is most definitely rough. He's powering through but will be glad to have this quarter done. College level chem on a quarter system is absolutely no joke.

As the admission season rolls on, I thought I would give an update as to the state of appointments thus far from MMI.

Notes:
I realize that the admission cycle is not over yet, however this is the state at Marion as of right now. I figured all of those who were looking to go to Marion and "stay the course" would be interested. Also, one cadet earned a AOG sponsorship, figured I would put that out there. (Obviously not included in the "Non-Sponsored w/ appointments" category. I will try to post an update on this thread at the end of the term with the "final" numbers, but I will have no real way of knowing anybody who gets a late appointment in May. I hope this is helpful.

What happened with the one sponsored prep from USAFA? It’s not common for a Falcon to not be appointed. It seems like the free agents have low appointment percentages from all prep schools this year. I hope they are just waiting to hand out their appointments this week.

Did all 42 non-sponsored pursue an appointment to at least one SA? In other words, is it fair to say 81% received turndowns or were waitlisted by at least one SA at this point in time?

Thanks for sharing this. I'm sure it's very insightful for folks considering their plan B right now and where MMI is in consideration.

All 42 cadets in the service academy program were instructed to apply to multiple academies, and I believe a vast majority of them probably applied to all. I have not surveyed everyone so I suppose there is a chance that a few if them didn’t, however a vast vast majority applied.

Not included in the list are a couple of Navy waitlisted and another handful of Coast Guard waitlisted; we also have one confirmed Merchant waitlisted as well

Pretty surprising to me that not one of the sponsored preps for Navy have received an appointment yet. I get that it takes longer, and Navy creates more work for themselves to round out/fill the class, but these are candidates that the alumni have already spent $$ on...seems to me that this should be done Feb/Mar.

Traditionally Navy is the latest. While I can't speak for the Foundation, I suspect it has to do with all the different calendars for the prep schools. For example, GMC is on a trimester schedule, so it makes sense to wait until at least two terms are complete for them.

Plus, the foundation scholars have a strong incentive to keep to their studies through the year!

Do they ask the sponsored cadets to apply to multiples too?

No. Since you have an agreement with the foundation, you only need to update your application to the academy.
Thank you. I appreciate you chiming I’m here. My DS will be there next year as a FFS.

Why have few self-prep students/reapplicants gotten appointments this year, at least to USAFA? We have a similar situation with the self-preps at NWP. It looks like it’s not a good year for reapplicants.

Final Thoughts/ Advice :
If you are sponsored you should seriously consider coming to MMI. The classes there are difficult and it will prepare you. Specifically, I feel very prepared for chem and physics at USNA. I think that the course rigor, combined with the atmosphere at MMI, leads to a very high rate of success for those who are lucky enough to get a sponsorship.

If you are non-sponsored, I still think that MMI is a good choice. I would ask about statistics from other prep schools, however I assume that they are similar. From the anecdotal evidence that I have seen around the forums, and at MMI, your district matters the most. If you are coming from a rural community that is considered a "less competitive" district, and you stay the course at Marion, dollars to doughnuts there's a good chance that you will get in somewhere. However if you are from a "competitive district" it seems to be much more up in the air.

MMI is a great school with a very supportive and caring staff. It is tough, especially the sciences, but it ultimately prepares you well. If you want to DM me with more specific questions, feel free, but otherwise good luck!

Sponsored appointment rate is actually 88% with the 2 rejections from Navy and the singleton from AFA.

Will echo your comment about being in a competitive district. If you are in one, best bet is probably college and ROTC where you can hope to pursue an additional nomination. Not a slight on MMI, just the dynamics of being in a district/state with a ton of competition.
