MMI - What to bring

Besides the bare bones packing list provided in the student handbook, I was hoping previous/current cadets/parents could make recommendations on what to bring - laptop and/or desktop computer, fitbit, cell phone, alarm clock, scientific calculator, car, bike, school supplies, containers for organization (bathroom caddy, totes for toilettries, desktop file tray, etc.). Thanks!

I am following too. My daughter is already growling at me. She held up the list, pointed, and told me "If it's NOT on here, DON'T buy it!" She is NOT normal. She can fit a week's worth of civilian clothes in a 5.11 Rush 24, asks for knives, watches, weights, pull-up bars and tactical gear for Christmas.

Bring a light weight blanket! Bring a small fan. The cadets will sleep on top of their made beds during The two week cadet training time. The blanket will save them.
Send quarters for laundry machines. Buy a digital watch with a vibrating alarm so they can wake themselves up before the cadre does.

A digital watch with vibrating alarm is a wonderful thing to have. It used to be that only Casio and Timex made them.
They are now made by several companies, and are inexpensive. Have a look at Wal-Mart.

I'll make sure my son doesn't mess with your daughter Magna Venari :) Thanks for all the suggestions. Please keep them coming.

LOL! She is just a tomboy, just like I was. She's had 5 years of Young Marines, 4 years of Marine Corps JROTC, and she was the female Ironman at her school last school year. She is the kid who is usually prepared, or can improvise.

Sounds like a real go-getter! Good for her! Which prep program is she doing? My son is doing the Merchant Marine program.

She is self Prep for the Coast Guard Academy, although she will consider the Merchant Marines Academy if she can not get into the Coast Guard Academy, but she will still commission as a Coast Guard Officer. She went out to sea on a schooner built in 1893 back in April and loved it. Her Maritime Instructor told us that her curly hair was the only way he distinguished her from the crew because she took to it like she was a crew member and belonged there. She has already received a certification in Logistics Management Principles from an agency that starts with "I" that I can not remember.

Go-getter is an under statement. She never stops, she is always busy. It has taken two adults and catching rides with friends for us to keep up with her extra-curricular activities, sports, color guard details, volunteer work and etc.

My son has finished his time at MMI. We now have a closet's worth of uniforms. Some never even worn! I'm looking to purge responsibly, as are other parents. If you want the uniforms, for FREE, I'm happy to unload. My son is @ 5'11", 165 lbs, 32x32 pants, 11 shoes, M shorts, L shirt.

You can really bring anything. I am a first year, and hopefully last year, SAP student here. When I came here I found I could bring anything I could fit under my bed for SMI (corps wide inspections). I know Alpha Company and Bravo Company have extra storage for your things if you don't have enough space for them. Make sure to bring quarters for laundry and plenty of snacks.

Most of the things you listed would be good to bring. I wouldn't advise a desktop computer simply because some of the companies have smaller rooms than others and it can be a pain to find a place to put it. I would say no to the bike, but a car would is great for leave over the weekends. Also, the barracks tend to get dusty quickly and you'll find that dust bunnies seem to materialize out of thin air; I would recommend bringing a small sweeper/dustpan for the floor or a Swiffer for cleaning surfaces. Bed straps/bungee cords to hold your sheets in place are a lifesaver. Not only will they keep your sheets tight for inspection, but you won't be messing up your sheets every time you sleep on top of them. Later in the year a lot of people (myself included) purchased fitted sheets for the bed along with some normal bedding to sleep on. The only time the beds need to be regulation is during SMI (2 or 3 per semester) and during ITC. Hope my answer helps!
