More indepth explanation of Congressional Nominations

So I understand the idea that Congressional Nominations represent, you have to get your M.O.C to nominate you for appointment. But I have some questions about slots and what exactly happens with them. For example, I know that a M.O.C can have 10 applicants for each one of the 5 slots they have per each service academy. What I am confused about is how exactly that works.

Is only 1 applicant going to get in from the 10 who were nominated for that slot from the M.O.C? Or can multiple people get in for just 1 slot?

If you have time on your hands read through all of the stickies and common question threads. So much info out there and the longstanding members tend to have the most accurate info from what I have been able to ascertain.
