Woke up to the dreaded TWE this morning. Our DS is sad but we are all glad to have direction now. He has a 4 year NROTC scholarship and will be heading to The Citadel. Good Luck everyone! This board is an amazing source of encouragement and information! Thank You everyone!

Navymom1 - your DS should be incredibly proud of his accomplishments. These service academy acceptances are often just a matter of numbers in a particular state. The Citadel NROTC program is outstanding and the PNS, Colonel Neil Scheuhle USMC, an outstanding warrior. There will typically be quite a few active duty Navy and Marine (MECEP) enlisted in the NROTC BN at The Citadel who have been selected by their service branch to attend college and earn their commissions. These men and women also serve as instructors in the NROTC BN. They offer Cadets great role models and assistance in preparing for their commissions. Best of luck to him.

Neil is retiring this summer but he has built and led a power house program.

Good luck to your boy NavyMom. Only great options!

The day has come. TWE for me. I want to thank everyone on this forum for their words of encouragement and their guidance. I plan on going to Virginia Tech w/out doing Corps of Cadets or ROTC. As of now, I think that I am going to reapply for class of 2022. If that doesn't work out then I will consider doing the USMC PLC program. Thanks again, and best of luck to all those who have been appointed. DONT GIVE UP THE SHIP!

Sorry to hear that.....maybe someone more knowledgeable can pipe in....would not choosing to do the Corp of Cadets or ROTC reflect negatively for a reapplication? I know we were told when interviewing with MOCs or ALO, they would be asking what your Plan B entails.....and it better include ROTC....shows dedication to serving. Anyone?

In addition to teaching you about the military and preparing for the Academy , it would also offer another nomination source by joining ROTC.

There is no requirement to do ROTC to have a successful reapplication. Join ROTC because it's what you want to do, not just to help your reapplication.

I assume that folks getting TWEs at this point had one or more noms. So having the extra nom source is helpful but not necessary. It's more important to go to a school you like and do well academically and otherwise.

Your desire to attend a SA should be because you see yourself serving as a military officer. That question may be hard to answer if you are not in ROTC but that's just my opinion. ROTC also allows for another nomination and appointment source. That coupled with learning how to be an officer are the advantages of ROTC.

Well you see, my parents don't really want me to go the military route. So the deal was that if I got into the academy or got the scholarship, then that's what I would do, but if I didn't then I had to go to a "normal" college for at least a year (they hope that I will change my mind about still wanting to commission). Plus, my desire is too serve my country as an officer, not necessarily to graduate from USNA. I am perfectly content with commissioning from OCS if that's what I have to do. Thanks for all the excellent responses everyone.

Hey Tom Cruise Jr. I respect your desire to compromise with your parents. It's far too easy to say it's my life and I'll do with it the way I like. Your a fine young man! True maturity. Besides if it doesn't work out you could be a bartender with flair on a far away paradise island! Did I just date myself?

You can still commission after college without doing ROTC. Just because someone doesn't do ROTC in college doesn't mean they don't want to go into the military.
