Multiple Nominations

Does having more than one nomination influence the decision making for acceptance in any way? I mean, I realize it’s kind of like having more than one ticket in a raffle, but does it influence the committee in terms of, “wow, this kid has multiple noms, we should give him extra consideration?”

Thanks!

I have read that it doesn’t matter.

But my son is still shooting for a second one.

Ckarifying the above comments: You only need one. Having more than one allows a candidate to compete on more than one slate, i.e. may be #9 on one slate but #2 on another slate, so in that regard it may help. But SAs do not look at a candidate and say, “She has two nominations, so she must be better than this other candidate who has only one.”

What does it mean if a candidate is number one on a slate? My son got his LOA and believes he is 1 on his slate. But needs the color blind waiver.

In your DS case he has a nom, doesn’t really matter if he is 1 or 10 days on the slate with an LOA. What matters now is he gets a color deficiency waiver. 3Q + Nom = Appointment. His issue is the 3Q part. USNA issued him an LOA which means they definitely see him as competitive and want him. Now it’s up to USNA to issue the waiver.

In years past USNA used to wait on most color deficient applicants and then sort of rack and stack them before deciding who gets those coveted waivers in March-April. USNA caps it to 20 waivers, but has issued less than that in the past too. Last year they seemed to issue waivers to most if not all color deficiency candidates and then went from there. Not sure we have seen anyone chime in yet this year with a waiver. Also, this is all anecdotal as we observe on the forms each year. Obviously there are always exceptions that fall outside these patterns.

Thank you for the response. It gives me hope (maybe false hope).

You’ve got good answers from Hoops and Midcake.

He gets more bites at the apple.

The Admissions team knows that many states’ elected officials collaborate, to spread the wealth around, and no more than 1 nom is issued to any one candidate. They focus on the merits of the individual, their goals for the class, the slate competition, and other factors.

My DS is 3Q to USMA w a Principal Nomination. His first choice is USNA where he has two Nominations. We are uncertain on this but he is essentially assured a USMA Appointment correct? (Obviously we know nothing is guaranteed until he takes that Oath.) Glad to see some clarity on his two noms to USNA..... it seems it’s all about the slate.

If your DS is, in fact, 3Q with a principle nomination, then yes, he’s assured of an offer of appointment. And yes, it’s only an offer. It’s not an appointment until he takes the oath on R-Day, so bubble-wrap is your friend. Congratulations to him.
