NAPS 2024 Waitlist

Received his medical waiver the same day as waitlisted. So ultimately he is waiting on cold feet, quitter, and of course whomever is left on the waitlist. Powerball odds probably better.

A little communication of their part wouldn’t hurt a bit.
Have your son call them for an update.

What more would you want them to communicate to you? You are as updated as you can be. They have responsed to your sons inquiries. It could go to July. No way to know of a spot ultimately opens up, or not. Nothing more to do, but wait for that to happen, or not.

I guess the choice is to not wait? But he is VERY close. No way to know of someone will back out, or not, or an issue will clear (ie medical), assuming that’s the case. But most likely, at this point, it’s something along those lines.

My fingers are crossed 🤞!

One requirement is for all NAPS appointees to be enlisted in the Naval Reserve by NLT July 1st. This could open up some slots as some of the appointees forget the deadline or decide not to enlist and have that be their way out? I know for my DD the enlistment process was not fast nor straightforward. Took over a week to get the signed Orders after taking the oath, etc. And we live in a military heavy district. Then the enlistment folks forgot to have a signature on one of the pages and that had to be done and returned directly to NAPS. I told DD, welcome to the Navy! Hang in there, from what I have read, I bet dollars to donuts your son is on the list of the next appointees for July 1st drop outs.

...And given the fact that they don't report until 25 JUL, it leaves nearly another month of potential waiting for someone to change their mind.

I just hate it for these kids.

He has emailed, called , multiple times. Multiple emails one way non replied correspondence, and the phone calls typically “be patient could go to early July.”
If the enlistment due date is a rigid date and the candidate did not show initiative to become enlisted as instructed , then NAPS may just drop them and replace them at that point? I would. If you can't follow orders, then they don't want you. Good for those on the waitlist.

Gives the lucky waitlisted appointees 3 weeks to do the paperwork and get enlisted prior to reporting on July 25th. Have your HS diploma, SSN card, Birth Cert, driver's license or passport (all originals) gathered up. Get you latest vaccination record from your Doctor. You could do this now to save time.

For lucky waitlistees:

Call around about making an appointment ASAP with a navy recruitment office and tell them you will need an officer present to give the oath. From our experience if my DD was on the waitlist I would start calling around now, even if we don't know the final decision. Most enlistment offices will not know about NAPS, so there will be some explaining to do and there is a POC at NAPS for them to contact. Many say they do not have officers assigned to them. Of course, you can bring in an active duty or retired officer to give the oath - any branch, if you know someone who fits the requirement.

Some will blow you off - happened to my DD twice. Since enlisting a NAPSter does not count towards their enlisting quota I assume the juice was not worth the squeeze to them. Good learning experience for DD.

Once you find an office that will take you, you will submit the partially filled out Naval reserve enlistment forms to the enlistment office. They will send it to a processor. Processor will send it back to enlistment office and enlistee will come in and sign, date and witness the various forms; also bring in original documents mentioned earlier for verification. Then take the oath. You may have to wait a day or some days for the signed Orders to get back to you - this is needed for the NAPSTER to get on base on I-day.

Speaking of which, if family want to drop off DS/DD on I-day then you must submit the base access forms ahead of time for family members. Anyone 18 or older must have a form submitted with their driver's license number or passport. Fill and submit the forms as soon as you are appointed as it takes a few weeks to do the background vetting. If one has a military ID or CAC card that will get you in, too, no need for the form submittal.

DD made 3 copies of the enlistment package and her Vax record, put them in 3 separate folders. She is required to have on packet with her when she reports. One copy will be in DW's suitcase as backup. Third will be at home.

There was a zoom meeting last week and we copied the powerpoint slides - went over incoming and academic schedule, etc. I can post it if you want?

If you run into problems meeting the deadline, you can get additional time. As you experienced, not every recruiting office is familiar with the paperwork (especially the active duty orders required). A lot of the folks at the local recruiting offices are barely qualified to chip paint to put it nicely.

Also, not every locality has a NTAG with an officer. So, be creative (call local NROTC unit, etc.)

Good point on calling NROTC, VFW, American Legion, etc for an officer. Capt MJ had similar suggestions. Non qualified paint chippers is valid for some of the characters we dealt with. :D

So would a national guard colonel work? Or a retired army colonel? Both local guys that would step up im sure.

I think we are plowing new ground with a NAPS waitlist thread. I’d have to go look. Essentially you are waiting for someone to break or bail, and hope the slot that opens up fits your particular puzzle piece’s edges. Or it could be you are waiting on a med waiver, I apologize for not being current with your son’s specifics.
Been thru naps as a parent 2x I had never heard of a waitlist for naps. Until these recent naps threads.

My guess is that they have always had such a list but it was for internal use.

Yes. Any branch of the services, active or retired. Just bring verification docs to the office. You will confirm with the enlistment office when you make your appointment. We brought a good family friend, a retired Navy Cmdr, with us.

Agreed. Admissions would have to have a working list of just-missed-first-cut candidates to draw from to manage accession-attrition balance down to the single-digit days. Whether or not they tell those candidates and ask if they wish to remain on waitlist, probably depends on how the class is coming together.

Well if them being silent is a good sign, then the sign could not be any better. USNA did confirm son was still on the waitlist but that is all.

Paid tuition deposit at college, dormitory deposit,
Got registeted. College schedule curriculum map
Is screwed out of the gate because of decision to prioritize reapplying. He did get Chem and calc, he did get the two required ROTC classes (extracurricular ?) In HS he has 2 college English classes, so he is NOT taking an English class this semester because it won’t apply to pre mechanical engineering.

we did the same for our youngest, who was a waitlister. One thing we learned, was that the housing contract was actually null and void, bc he disenrolled when he accepted USNA. ITs void bc ‘non-students are not allowed to live in the college dorm’, or something to that effect. So we got all that back.

We would have lost the 300 registration fee had it not been for Covid. But we were ok with loosing that 300 anyhow.

Still rooting for him!!

Well my daughter's NAPS journey ended today. She set the deadline of today and removed her name from the waitlist. This morning she left for Naval Station Great Lakes for NSI with NROTC and will be attending The Citadel. Pretty amazing consolation prize! She may reapply next year but we'll see. Either way she will be an officer in the Marine Corps and we're extremely proud of her. Best thing about his whole process was that she did it all. All we did was encourage her. I had friends ask me for advice in the process and I had no idea. For our country's future leaders this is the only way it should be. Good luck to those still hanging around and waiting.
