Hi, my DD just received an email from the USNA admissions with an offer to NAPS. I don't know much about that at all. Can anyone fill me in on life there? Is it hard to get into the USNA from there? Do they get paid? Are they in the military? She is actually a bit bummed she didn't get into the academy directly but I think this a huge win. Thank you for your help.

Congratulations to your DD! What an awesome opportunity. I am sure she felt initial disappointment but the mids our son met who had been NAPS mids said they were happy to have an additional year of preparation, and that they felt more confident and plebe year went well as a result.
I found this link that might help you, I don't have any personal knowledge of NAPS. https://www.usna.edu/NAPS/index.php

Congratulations! You are automatically accepted into the academy once completing naps (all requirements must be met to be considered for admission) and they are payed enlisted pay. So much more pay then they will receive at the academy. They are in the military when at NAPS.

It is a GOLDEN TICKET!

If she completes the program there successfully, they are essentially saving her a seat in the Class of 2025. Her academics will be polished up, she’ll get basic military skills down (drill, uniform wear, bed-making, military culture and customs, etc.), gain maturity with a year away from home, learn from the prior enlisted there, go off to I-Day in the summer of 2021 with a ready-made set of friends.

I think she is given an enlisted paygrade of E-5, but I am not certain.

She still has to get a nom from the usual sources next cycle, but if she is unsuccessful, USNA will typically find her a nom.

Most NAPSters do well once at USNA.

There is a whole lot of information about NAPS here.. Bottom line, successful completion of NAPS is "almost" assured acceptance to USNA next year. (The "almost" is only because there are exceptions to every rule....in the rare case of non-acceptance, there is usually a real good reason; and most of the time , the persons who would have a problem self-select by dropping out of NAPs).

I know that for an 18 year old, an offer to NAPS instead of direct appointment may seem like a rejection, or a wasted year. There is nothing further from the truth. I know -- I've been there, and I can look back almost 40 years and unequivocally say it was the best thing that ever happened to me. For details ...see my earlier comments on the subject.

PS .. CAPT MJ posted while I was typing; unless things have changed ..NAPSters enlist and start at E-1 (with promotion to E-2 around Christmas). That's pretty good money for a kid right of high school, with no real expenses to deal with.

My DS went Foundation (similar but different) and the way it was described to him is that he has a spot reserved for him at the Academy. Just don't lose it. While he was disappointed at first, he quickly realized that it was Foundation or plan B. If he wanted Academy, this was his only path. So, off he went. He did well and is now a plebe.

As Old Navy BGO mentioned, he felt like it was a wasted year. However, I was more than happy to have that transition year for him.

You’re right, I would bet, on the paygrade. It’s E-5 for OCS. Conflation on my part.

And, there is a Navy medical clinic and dental clinic there for routine care and vaccinations, galley for chow, so as pointed out, very few expenses.

And at the end of the day, its Newport RI! Lots of people spend big bucks to go there for vacation and it is a pretty good place to be for the year.
except that it gets really really cold.

This is not a guarantee to the USNA. It certainly increases your chances for an appointment. You still have to obtain a Nomination and go through that process.

Actually, it is about a 99% guarantee. I've never seen someone not get into USNA that followed the rules and had adequate academic and physical performance. While a nomination is required, there are additional nomination sources available in addition to the MOC and VP nominations and again, almost everyone goes through to USNA.

My DS is currently at NAPS and his MOC told him that he would have his nomination again once he submitted the application and met the performance requirements at NAPS. His interview was a breeze. He just told me today that those who aren't meeting the requirements were called in for counselling this week.

He was concerned about the extra 10 months but I think we both agree that the transition from home to school went a lot better through NAPS. He has matured a lot during this time.

They do earn pay; "Direct-entry Midshipman Candidates will receive approximately $1,087.80 a month* (before taxes, BAF and Uniform deductions). "
There are other fees taken out to cover other battalion activities like; trip to the Army/Navy game or the stay at the USNA. These fees are also covered up front and deducted from their pay. They also have deductions for their uniforms and that's about $1700.00 taken out over 7 payments.
Focus on saving though because when you get to the academy your saved funds will come in handy

One more note; Scholarships may be used to pay for the BAF fee and uniform expenses mentioned above.

I feel like my best chances for admission to USNA would be through an offer to NAPS due to my stats. Are all NAPS offers released by April 15 as well?

That is admissions goal. There is also a NAPS wait list many years too. That could mean more waiting. As always, USNA cautions anyone on a wait list for USNA or NAPS to continue with a back up plan
