Hi, can someone tell me all about the closing ceremony for the summer seminar? I’m looking forward to picking my DS up that day and wasn’t sure what to expect. Also, what is the best way to pack for those of you who have completed the summer seminar in the past? Do you cram your pillows and everything into a suitcase?

Thank you In advance!

Can’t speak to closing ceremony, other than to say we didn’t attend, DD didn’t expect us to, and don’t think we missed much.

As for what to pack, follow USNA’s instructions to the T. No more, no less. Pack as light as you can, using a simple-to-haul device. Not a good time to break out the Samsonite 28” Super Duper Long-Haul model. Good test: Is the bag small enough to carry on the plane?

When I went to NASS the closing ceremony was essentially an awards ceremony. They gave out a few awards for the male and female NASS attendee who had the highest CFA scores that week as well as they announce the color company for that session (the most spirited company). I believe it was the closing ceremony which they also gave stats on the previous graduating class' branches and an overview of each branch. My parents came simply because we live so close by, but you wouldn't be missing much if you didn't attend.

Also about packing, I would suggest bringing a few more pairs of socks and undergarments than the 6 or so the packing list suggests. Annapolis is very humid in the summer and you will want to change your socks and undergarments frequently. I also wound up not needing pajamas to sleep in as my company had us sleep in our PT gear to save time in the morning.

Parent here, didn’t attend.

Another note about packing...send a garbage bag or two to wrap up any wet, muddy gear in that’s issued. Also make sure there is enough space to bring that gear home. And maybe a souvenir or 5 from the Mid Store. DS took a big gym bag and carried it on the plane, and was fine. He did borrow one of those sleeping bags that stuffs into a tiny bag. And a pretty small pillow.

My parents didn't attend, we lived too far away. The parents would not be able to be with their kid during the ceremony anyway, and they wouldn't miss much if they couldn't attend.

i attended and was glad i did. it was interesting to feel the dynamics of the groups competing in their chants and songs. the speaker was amazing and the part about all the different jobs you can get upon graduation was helpful to me as a non-military person. i enjoyed it a lot. plus i needed to help him drive home as he talked talk talked talked for 1 hour straight, and then was sound asleep for the remaining 4

Do you cram your pillows and everything into a suitcase?

If you are not a camping family then you may want to borrow some super small, lightweight camp gear. A sleeping bag and pillow can take up a miniscule amount of space, and contribute almost no weight to your student's luggage. I hope your son enjoys the experience!

That you all so so so much!!!!! This info is super helpful!! So do you recommend the sleeping bag and forget the sheets?
