My son is attending NASS, but i have been sent little to no information and neither has he. One of the questions we had was if he needs to bring a suitcase or if his stuff has to be packed in a rolling bag or duffel. Also if he is not in the best shape to complete his CFA will he be ok still?

A suitcase will be perfectly fine. He should be trying to pass his CFA because it is the most convenient place to do so. He can retake on his own later if needed (at least that’s how it worked 4 years ago).

My son is shipping out to NASS in 2 days...he is bringing a duffle bag (big one)...for the cfa, we did some practice runs of the whole test, but no personal trainer stuff...just do your best

I recommend a duffle bag if you can. Suitcase is ok if not too big and bulky. Good luck with CFA! Remember to account for adrenaline:)

My DD brought a backpack and duffel bag to CVW but plans to bring a rolling carry-on and backpack for NASS.

Keep in mind that the detailers grab your luggage immediately upon arriving and have to carry it up stairs, and then you will have to walk a fair distance and carry it for up to 4 flights of stairs. You don’t want to be the one struggling because you brought an international-sized suitcase for a 6 day program. You really don’t need a lot of space because most of your clothes and supplies are provided, so a duffel bag works great.

Bring some extra shorts. Session 1 had a shortage so they are allowed to wear their own shorts when not in “PT gear”

Don’t forget, participants are issued clothing so they will need space for that to bring home. My DS brought a carry on sized roller & a backpack, during drop off, that was the most common form of luggage combo I saw.

This!!! One of the souvenirs DD brought back was a pair of heavy cotton sweatpants that were…wet. From crawling through mud and water the day before. Yup. Did a number on all the other stuff in the bag. Wasn’t pleasant to unpack after that long plane ride home.

I didn’t think they had stairs at the Boat school?
Chopping up and down the ladder wells with full laundry bags is one of my favorite memories from plebe summer. We may not have many hills on campus, but chopping up to the 4th deck all plebe year keeps the legs in shape.

Note to folks who aren't "yard experienced": That "4th deck" can be anywhere from the 5th to 7th floor depending on which wing we're talking about. That is because there is a "0 Deck" as well as one or more basement levels and depending on which door you enter from, you might be climbing a couple of stories just to get to "zero".

I brought a duffel bag with a strap for SLE. It is true that you will probably go up more stairs than you think possible and many of them will be with your bag. Here's the bag I brought to SLE and will also be bringing to NASS.
One other thing about this bag that I liked about this bag that I would recommend looking for.

It has a separate side pocket that is closed off from the rest of the bag for shoes or otherwise nasty and wet gear.

I'd be sure to get a bag with a separate and vented -vented to OUTSIDE the bag- pocket because I definitely came home with things I didn't want in the main pocket.

Best of luck,
C

Ok folks ... here is what NOT to bring - a sick kiddo. If your DS or DD is sick, please keep them home. Covid is not the only thing ... if they test negative for Covid but have a cough that keeps them up at night or any other viral symptoms not only will they not be able to participate fully, they will keep their roomies up at night and share their "other than Covid" sickness. Speaking from experience ... they will not be screening nor actively looking to isolate sick kids. No doubt all the kids have been looking forward to this experience but if you - the candidate, your DD or DS is sick - do the right thing. Showing up sick ruins it and then some for so many other people. My DD went to SLE healthy having recently fully recovered from Covid and then came home from SLE and is battling a really awful virus that is way worse than COVID thanks to her roommate who coughed all night, every night from day 1 and insisted she tested Covid negative therefor had every right to show up. We are hoping DD is healthy by the time she is supposed to get on the plane for NASS, if not she will be staying home. With that .. have an awesome time, it is a great experience!

Always makes me wonder why they weren’t called “levels” vice “decks.” Clearly SWOs were left out of the naming convention 😀.
