Nearly 100 Mids Moved Off Campus Due to COVID Positive

That was yesterday...additional Mids moved to a 2nd hotel today. This in addition to Mids already
commuting”, staying at their local home, or with sponsors. Praying for this to subside quickly

Glad they are finding some extra space. Talking to my mid over the weekend, he was concerned that he knew infected mids with no where to go except back to their Bancroft room with uninfected roomie (iso was already full). He was pretty glad that his own roomies have all already had COVID, and so (presumably?) some measure of immunity.

My DS said they’re using the squash courts for iso. I didn’t know they had squash courts
Actually not a small number of them. Squash was a varsity sport at USNA for a very long time and generations of mids were introduced to it
through mandatory participation in PE classes.

Are all the mids in ISO positive? I was under the impression that it also included contact traced persons. If indeed it is 700 positive, that’s a “wow!”. That would probably lead the nation in school positivity record.

EDIT: apparently most are positive.

over 700 mids now in ISO, at this rate they'll get to herd immunity before they get vaccines.

We spent some time on the USNA parent FB boards last night. An alarming number of the midshipmen getting sick now are on their second bout of COVID. There were enough parents reporting this that it seems unlikely that faulty testing explains all of them. The theory that having recovered from the original doesn't protect from the variant may be in play.

"An alarming number of the midshipmen getting sick now are on their second bout of COVID."

That is a bit concerning. That might suggest that multiple variants are infecting mids. Lots of opportunities for mingling of virus variants to produce more mutations (hopefully the aggressive iso will prevent this). Anne Arundel County has the highest infection rate in Maryland right now. Until (and perhaps after) the mids get vaccinated, they could represent a community vector of concern. I suspect there won't be any more off-Yard liberty for quite some time, if at all, this term. My Youngster is in decent spirits, doing okay, and not in iso, although "his plebe" was infected. His only complaint is that he can't lift weights. But he said he hasn't seen morale so low as it is now, especially among 2023 (more so than the plebes) - some talk about DOR. Probably too much time filled with complaining (which itself can be contagious - makes me think of the locker-room power-of-positive-thinking lecture in "The Natural"). It's a leadership challenge.
