My last two pins, image below. I have exchanged pins with other survivors and first responders at various 9/11 remembrance ceremonies over the 20+ years since.

0937. The Pentagon, E-Ring, Director Navy Staff’s office close to the “point” where the corridor turned to the adjacent face, where impact occurred. We were watching the newscast on overhead screens. We heard the massive boom, the building shook, we ran out and looked around the point, smelled the av gas (smelled weirdly familiar, and later it made sense) and saw a roiling black cloud coming fast down the corridor. It was go-go-go after that, with no idea what happened. Once I made it outside, there was the gaping hole in flames, spreading, but no sign of a plane. Disintegrated. And the horror of seeing how far in the destruction went, and the people there who had no idea what hit them. We had about a minute to think about that, and then military people were heading back in to help get people out who were trapped in impact areas. No first responders on the scene yet. Navy senior officers, surface warfare, submarines and aviation, were running the scene, as damage control measures in fire/fuel emergencies are part and parcel of naval officer training, and training and discipline took over. First responders arrived soon after and relieved us. Military folks had already set up triage areas. Navy chaplains were in a meeting at the Naval Military Personnel Command at the nearby old Navy Annex, and literally ran down the hill and did what they do without peer.

My USNA class's social media have already been remembering Ken "Waldo" Waldie, our class president who was aboard Flight 11.

As always on the anniversary, I mentally check in with my former boss and mentor RADM Bud Flagg and will spend a while just imagining
another conversation with him.

I looked for a thread before posting a bit ago. Didn’t find one! Apologies for the dupe thread.

The thing that’s been on my mind today, is my son was days away from being born. Not around. But born a couple months after. There are a whole lot of C/O ‘24’s that were born in 2001. Now they are graduating, and commissioning, and heading out to serve. He doesn’t remember. But he honors. And it’s a part of who he is, in what he carries on. Circle of life!

God Bless our great Nation🇺🇸

I was pregnant with our 2024 that morning. Wasn’t feeling well, cramping. Saw the first plane hit while laying in bed. The perspective I saw made me think small plane. Got ready and went to work. I was a registrar for a middle school. Second plane hit when I walked in. We are a military town, lots of parents immediately came to take their kids home. Base went on lockdown. Boss sent me home.

I was on the phone with my dad stuck in bumper to bumper traffic with military personnel having been recalled to base. Our small four lane highway was jammed. What normally took me six minutes took over 30. My dad said there was no way they could get out of the towers. He was thinking there would be 20,000 plus lost. The first tower fell four miles from home.

DH, DD and brother in law raised a 20 foot flag pole and engraved the date in concrete that night, and raised the flag. He raised the pole to 30 feet on the 20th Anniversary. I lowered it to half staff at four this morning.

The class of 2024 makes my heart swell with pride and gratitude, as do all that come before and after them.

We won’t forget.

Wow, you were closer than me. I was in 1D639. We were using temp furniture because our regular furniture had just been moved right where the plane hit. We were days away from moving into that new office.

My wife was upstairs on the second floor getting coffee. I grabbed her bag and waited in the hallway for her. Twenty years later, we watched our 18yo freshman son swear in for his AROTC contract on 9/11/21.

I have the left pin somewhere but haven't seen the right one before.

DNS staff was supposed to have moved in before 9/11 to new offices in impact area. Boss told me to get us re-scheduled to move at same time as VCNO and CNO, later in September,

I was successful, else I wouldn’t be here. My first big staff challenge, having arrived onboard last week of August, going to do battle with the facilities staff for the Pentagon. Attila skills were needed, which is why my boss picked me for the Deputy Director billet.

I have heard that all newly built Navy ships contain some metals from ground zero. Idk if that accurate or not. I read about one ship for sure that contains 9/11 steel. Apparently there are at least 3.

Very moving.

I believe the USS Arlington only has the exhibit room. There is a nice model of the USS Arlington at the Arlington Courthouse.

I spoke with the CO in April and he mentioned wanting to do more with the local community from the area. This was the message of his replacement as well.
