New Medical Condition During Waiver Process

Hello,

I am a High School Senior currently in the process of attaining a waiver from NROTC for asthma medication prescription after age 13.

A couple of days ago, I found out that I have a small left varicocele. I was told by the doctor that it was very minor, and did not require any treatment.

I believe that it meets all of the standards laid out in DoD Instruction 6130.03, “Medical Standards for Appointment, Enlistment, or Induction in the Military Services,” those being:
(1) On the left side only.
(2) Asymptomatic and smaller than the testes.
(3) Reducible.
(4) Without associated testicular atrophy.

Therefore, this does not appear to be a disqualifying condition, but I know that is not for me to decide.

My question is, how can I notify DoDMERB and/or the Navy of this condition? I want to be transparent, but I have already completed my DoDMERB physical and all remedial appointments.

Any help would be appreciated, as I am not sure how to approach this while already being in the midst of the medical qualification process.

Thank you!

Reach out to the dodmerb person who was assigned to you And tell them that you need to update your file. My DS did and they were very helpful with the process. They will give you step by step help.

Best of luck

In case Mr. Mullen, our resident DoDMERB Deputy, is taking one of his rare naps, go to the DoDMERB website, find the left-hand side menu, go to Contacts, find yours by where your last name falls.

And good for you updating your medical history as you should!

Might want to also consider a second opinion…

I definitely could seek out a second opinion. However, considering that it has never caused me any issue and appears very minor, I didn’t think it necessary.

Is there any particular reason you recommend a second opinion?

In general, imo, a diagnosis that gives you a “label”, that will follow you in your medical records, it is a good idea for a second opinion. To ensure it’s a proper diagnosis. Our own doctors even encouraged that.

It’s not related necessarily to getting another opinion on something that’s bothersome, or not, but rather if it’s something that will be a ‘condition’ that will be part of your medical records.

So, in general, imo it could be a good idea. I’m not a medical person nor do I have any familiarity, or opinion, with your medical finding.

Not to get involved with opinions... I'll provide a fact.

FACT: The presence of a varicocele on the left side only rarely gives signs or symptoms. The DQ is for the "presence" of it. I'll offer one more time to email me, but it's totally your choice. :wiggle:
