New Navy Regs…Will this apply at USNA?

Will they be selling the bucket cover at the NEX? Or will we have to find one on our own. I joined after they got rid of the bucket covers, so I sadly don’t have one :(

I’m also on the lookout for one of those green flight jacket you can sew a bunch of patches on the back of. They stop issuing those about a year before I checked into Pensacola
I imagine the NEX will get them eventually. CNO Franchetti could have a say in that ;). Also try the Thrift Shop at Corry Station. Lots of uniforms there. I think I saw some buckets there with and without scrambled eggs. You might be able to find a Nomex flight jacket at the Military surplus store on Navy Blvd too.

Planning to check out that thrift store tomorrow actually! The Mastiff flight jacket they issued us is pretty nice and comfy so no complaints there if I can’t locate one of the “vintage” ones. I just think the patched-up ones look so cool, especially when you get far enough along in your flying career and have a ton of patches on them!

Good and obvious change. Better late than never. Reminds me of how at USNA they used to tell us it was unprofessional to keep your cell phone in your front pocket. First, that just makes no sense at all, complete non sequitur. And my reaction was always, if we can’t use our pockets why do our uniforms have them?
Funniest thing I ever saw was DS putting his cell phone and wallet in his socks.

As an enlisted Sailor, I remember stashing a pack of cigarettes in one sock, wallet and Zippo lighter in the other.

As a MIDN and as a Marine Officer, I always kept my wallet in one sock. Nothing in pockets except for ID card in left breast shirt/blouse pocket.

Hands in pockets is going to take some getting used to, not going to lie.

Glad to see the old school female “bucket” cover coming back around, too.

You can’t lay your hand upon the plow if it’s in your pocket …

I have no skin in the game because I never had to, nor will I ever need to, wear an officer's cover. But I must say that, as a mere observer, I'm a fan of the unisex cover (or whatever it's called). I believe it looks very smart and snazzy on men and women both. DD wears such a cover now as a Marine, and I hope it doesn't change.

But again: Easy for me to say. My bald head is fully exposed all day. 🫢🤗😂

It just doesn’t look right in many cases, especially for petite females. And the dress blue jacket is off as well. It’s just something with the cut that doesn’t lay correctly. They kinda barfed up the design IMO.

Actually, the NAVADMIN guidance is that the stores will NOT sell them. From what I can see, this is allowing use of previously owned bucket hats as they don't seem to envision producing new ones.

Rumor has it that ADM Francetti was not a fan of the change to the unisex cover. There have been examples in the past of uniform changes that were very "focused" as in limited to very few folks in high places who wanted them. Example: the "return" of Service Dress Khaki in the early oughts which seemed to be limited to ADMs Mullen and Stavridis and just a very small coterie of others.

Maybe someday we'll get to wear the Type III NWU fleece with the rest of the Type III NWU.

Or maybe that's just too much to ask.

USNA needs to get rid of any uniform that isn’t worn in the fleet with the exception of the parade uniform.

I hated whiteworks when I was a MIDN and did everything I could to not wear them after plebe summer. On days with PE classes, I’d let MIDN wear the issued “track suit” that is much more functional. NWU is fine for plebe summer.

Hated summer working blues and winter working blues with the ties tucked into the shirt.

I have zero skin in the game, just casual observations from a “Grumpy Old Grad”.

Do you mean the black fleece (parka liner) over NWUs without the parka? That’s authorized as far as I’m aware.

It surely does apply to USNA. It was very funny seeing everyone at NAPS and other near commands such as OCS or ODS walking with their hands in their pockets, we felt free!

The black is the NWU Type I liner. There's a tan one that was made for the NWU Type III. Originally the Type III was organizational clothing only, and the tan liner was issued along with the rest of the uniform. Most importantly, the tan liner had pockets.

They should make the NWU fleece authorized for wear with coveralls too.

I also have opinions about the black rank tab. Some O-6 somewhere got way too salty about not being saluted.

How do you feel about the 2POC?

There is no more Winter Working Blue at USNA. No more tie tucked in and all that. From what I've seen, they
wear the track suit on PE days already.

Don’t believe white works are worn after Plebe Summer anymore. I was also there when we wore them for PE days. Winter Working Blues are no more. Been gone awhile.

The patches on NOMEXs do look pretty cool. Particularly, the Centurian patch jet jocks wear. Our squadron had a two-patch policy – the squadron patch and the American flag. I think the CO had visions of the squadron looking like a NASCAR pitstop with sponsors galore. My DW sewed on all the patches I garnered on my parachute bag. It really helped identifying it on detachments when it was unloaded with all the other gear. One patch I look back on with a grin is the doctored United States Navy Patch. Embroidered under United States Navy was “One Good Deal After Another.” It wasn't the type of patch to wear in a command that didn't have a sense of humor or appreciate sarcasm.
